Description: Payment | Shipping Walter Scott WAVERLEY OR 'TIS SIXTY YEARS SINCE 1st Scottish 1814 very rare WAVERLEY OR 'TIS SIXTY YEARS SINCE published anonymously by Walter Scott. Edinburgh: Printed by James Ballantyne & Co. for Archibald Constable & Co, 1814. "Second Edition," stated on title page. Published anonymously in 1814, only one week after the first printing of 1000 copies sold out in two days, this second edition (what today we would call the second printing) still did not reveal the author's name. It was Scott's first venture into prose fiction and is widely accepted as the first historical novel. It has the first issue point: "our" for "your" in the first line of text of p.136 in Volume 2, although, again, this is the second printing, one week after the first printing. Still an incredibly rare survival. Three volumes; size of the bindings: 4 1/4 inches x 7 1/8 in. Volume 1: 358 pp., final imprint leaf present. Volume 2: 370pp. final imprint leaf present. Volume 3: 371pp. imprint present at bottom of p. 371. The calf bindings appear to be contemporary; they would have been bound by the publisher or the bookseller, over the original boards, soon after publication, as was the style and custom of the period. Bound in quarter light brown calf over original gray marbleized boards, leather corner darts, spine in six compartments separated by gilt ruled double line bands, title and volume number in second and fourth compartments against dark brown leather backgrounds. A VERY GOOD PLUS set, complete in three volumes. The inner and outer hinges on all three volumes are firm; the lower spine end of Vol. I shows a small chip to the leather. The lower front corner of Vol. I is slightly pushed, as are the lower corners of Vol. III. There are no previous owner's markings. The texts are clean and bright. The interiors have little to no signs of handling, though some pages show age-related tanning at the margins. Considered the first historical novel, "Waverley" was extremely popular when first published, spawning an entire series of novels by the same name and defining a genre. Extremely rare, especially in this sharp condition. Ranked number 86 on Daniel S. Burt's, "Novel 100," a ranking of the 100 greatest novels of all time, and on numerous other lists. It is the time of the Jacobite uprising of 1745 which sought to restore the Stuart dynasty in the person of Charles Edward Stuart, known as "Bonnie Prince Charlie". A young English dreamer and soldier, Edward Waverley, is sent to Scotland that year. He journeys north from his aristocratic family home, Waverley-Honour, in the south of England, first to the Scottish Lowlands and the home of family friend Baron Bradwardine, then into the Highlands and the heart of the rebellion and its aftermath. Edward has been brought up in the family home by his uncle, Sir Everard Waverley, who maintains the family Tory and Jacobite sympathies, while Edward's Whig father works for the Hanoverian government in nearby London. Edward is given a commission in the Hanoverian army and posted to Dundee, then promptly takes leave to visit Baron Bradwardine, a Jacobite friend of his uncle, and meets the Baron's lovely daughter Rose. When wild Highlanders visit the Baron's castle, Edward is intrigued and goes to the mountain lair of Clan Mac-Ivor, meeting the Chieftain Fergus and his sister Flora, who turn out to be active Jacobites preparing for the insurrection. But Edward has overstayed his leave and is accused of desertion and treason, and then arrested. The highlanders rescue him from his escort and take him to the Jacobite stronghold at Doune castle then on to Holyrood Palace where he meets Bonnie Prince Charlie himself. Encouraged by the beautiful Flora Mac-Ivor, Edward goes over to the Jacobite cause and takes part in the Battle of Prestonpans (September 1745). The battle is recounted in some detail. Undaunted by the light, inaccurate guns, the Highlander army continued its charge; however, the centre became bogged down in marshy terrain, and as they continued forward their different speeds of advance caused them to form into a "V". One of the soldiers who tumbles in the marsh is the Hanoverian Colonel Talbot, who Waverley picks up on his horse, saving his life. This man turns out to be a close friend of his uncle. When the Jacobite cause fails in 1746, Colonel Talbot intervenes to get Edward a pardon. After attending the trial in Carlisle at which Fergus is condemned, Edward is rejected by the passionate Flora, a representative of the romantic past, and marries the Baron's daughter, the calmer Rose Bradwardine who symbolises a modern rational Scotland in the post-Union settlement. Despite Scott's efforts to preserve his anonymity, almost every reviewer guessed that Waverley was his work. Many readers too recognized his hand. One, Jane Austen, wrote: "Walter Scott has no business to write novels, especially good ones. – It is not fair. He has Fame and Profit enough as a Poet, and should not be taking the bread out of other people's mouths.– I do not like him, and do not mean to like Waverley if I can help it – but fear I must".
