Description: It is hard to escape the legacy of the Punch Magazine. From 1841 to 2002, the magazine cast a satirical eye on life in Britain. It charted the interests, concerns and frustrations of the country and today it stands as an invaluable resource not just as cartoon art and satire, but as primary source material for 20th century historians. SOMEBODY'S DARLAN? --French Vichy Admiral Darlan sits outside the Allied Secret Debate clutching the British, French, American and German flags after having ceded control to the Allies in North Africa. Darlan would be assassinated just two weeks after this cartoon was published. Jean Louis Xavier François Darlan (7 August 1881 – 24 December 1942) was a French admiral and political figure. He was admiral of the fleet and Chief of Staff of the French Navy in 1939 at the beginning of World War II. After France signed an armistice with Nazi Germany in 1940, Darlan served in the pro-German Vichy regime, becoming its deputy leader for a time. When the Allies invaded French North Africa in 1942, Darlan was the highest-ranking officer there, and a deal was made, giving him control of North African French forces in exchange for joining their side. Less than two months later he was assassinated.Full size: 8 x 10 1/2 inches, including borders. Pictured image is slightly cropped. Verso has unrelated text.
