Description: This vintage MCM Florentine chess set is a stunning addition to any game collection. With intricate hand carvings on each piece, this set is sure to impress. This set seems to be rare and this is the info I could collect on it: Originally produced in the 15th century, and scarcely seen since this hand carved wood Florentine chess set is from the 1950’s. This set includes a rook designed as an elephant, rather than as a castle as is found in other European sets. Many similar plastic Florentine sets were produced in large numbers so to find one that is hand carved from wood is quite rare. The king measures approximately 4.65” high. The background of the uniqueness of the Florentine set is explored by David Parlett in “The Oxford History of Games”, Oxford, 1999, p.303: "Elephants had no more place in the European consciousness than in the Arabic." Parlett explains that the early rook as an elephant points to the East Indian origins of the game of chess. Later, the chariot was introduced in Arabic cultures in place of the elephant, and still later, Europeans changed the design of the rook to that of a castle for reasons which are explained in Parlett's book. Crafted from high-quality wood, this set is built to last. The pieces are in good vintage shape with some curling or loose portions of the felt pad green bottoms on some. *There are 32 pieces however there is an extra light colored pawn & is missing one light color bishop. Priced accordingly. No box or board included. Whether you're a collector or simply looking for a unique chess set, this Florentine set is sure to exceed your expectations. Comes from a non smoking but dog friendly home.
