Description: "The Duke"....."the Duke of Flatbush".....Duke Snider had several nicknames, but they all stood for one thing....."quality". Duke Snider was quality! This great ball player spent most of his Major League Baseball career playing for the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers (1947-1962). In his 16 seasons with the Dodgers, Duke Snider helped lead the Dodgers to six World Series, with victories in 1955 against the Yankees, and in 1959 against the Go-Go Chicago White Sox. Snider was named to the National League All-Star roster eight times, and was the National League Most Valuable Player runner-up in 1955. The Duke finished his major league career with a lifetime .295 batting average, over 2,100 hits, over 400 home runs, scored over 1,250 runs, and over 1,300 runs batted in. And defensively, Duke posted a .985 career fielding percentage. And Duke capped that off by being elected to Baseball's Hall of Fame in 1980. Yes, Duke Snider was indeed quality! This individual page was taken from a large wall calendar featuring Great Moments in Sports. While the entire page measures 14.5 inches by 26 inches, the art work featuring Duke Snider measures 14 1/2 inches by 14 1/2 inches. Directly under the art work of Duke Snider on the calendar page is some verbiage included about him from Brown & Bigelow. Since the observer probably won't be able to read it from the pictures I submitted, I thought I would share the content of the text. It states: In World Series play, tension, excitement, and brilliance are part and parcel of the fall classic, And the sterling performance of Brooklyn's Duke Snider will long be remembered as one of the truly great moments of the 1952 Series. Deadlocked with the New York Yankees at 2-2, Snider came to bat in the 6th inning and lofted a tremendous blast over the right field barrier, scoring Reese ahead of him and giving the Dodgers a 4-2 win in the opener. Again in the 5th game the likeable Duke kept Brooklyn's hopes alive with a circuit smash. The 6th game was a thriller, but Snider's two homers were of no avail in a losing cause. True, the Yankees won the Series in seven games, but not until Duke Snider had enshrined himself in baseball's loftiest niche with Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig --- exploding four home runs in World Series competition! And of course since that 1952 World Series loss in which Snider etched his name forever in history, the Dodgers and Snider came back and won both the 1955 World Series against the Yankees and the 1959 World Series against the White Sox.
