Viggo Madsen ( 1885-1954) Born in Lyngby, Denmark in 1885. During his early years he studied under his father, the artist and museum director Carl Johan Madsen. Around 1899, he attended the study school under professor Zahrtmann and moved to Paris were studied at the Academie des Beaux-Arts in 1906. During his Paris years he also studied under Professor Chr. Krohg. He exhibited at the prestigious Charlottenborg Palace after 1904, in New York 1912, in Stockholm 1919 and at several other international exhibitions. In 1932 he was awarded the Soedring Medalion. Viggo Madsen travelled and worked a great deal in Europe and resided in Berlin from 1902. Paris from 1906. Skt. Petersburg from 1919, as well as in Holland, Belgium and the United Kingdom. From about 1916, he worked under the master, Joakim Skovgaard and was commissioned to do larger church interior décor and altarpieces for the Ikast Church, Jolby church, Herning church and the Lundtoft church. The works of Viggo Madsen has been characterized as poetic realism and is known for his series of country landscapes done at dawn and sundown. His color use is often mild and his brush-strokes delicate. He debuted at the Royal Charlottenborg exhibition in 1904 and had solo shows at Kunsthallen in 1932 and the Art union in 1941.
