Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE This engraving is part of a beautifully illustrated guide to the palace of Versailles, depicting all of its statues and ornaments of the gardens and fountains by Simon Thomassin, a famous Paris engraver and member of the French Academy with the title “Graveur du Roy”, or “Engraver of the King.” King Louis XIV, to whom the book is dedicated, to showcase the King’s ‘admiration of the universe’, commissioned this work in 1689. YEAR OF PRINTING c1690 ENGRAVER/ARTIST Engraved by Thomassin based on sculptures. Thomassin drew the statues at Versailles in 1689, but his bound book of engravings did not appear for another few years. SOURCE From: Thomassin's (c1690) Simon Thomassin -- (b Paris, 1654; d Paris, 1733). Great-grand-nephew of (1) Philippe Thomassin. He studied under the engraver Etienne Picart. He was noticed by Louis XIV's powerful minister Jean-Baptiste Colbert, who sent him to Rome on a royal scholarship from 1676 to 1680. On his return to France he became Engraver to the King and a member of the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture. He engraved portraits and religious subjects after Nicolas Poussin, Eustache Le Sueur, Bon Boullogne and Philippe de Champaigne. His son Henri-Simon was his pupil. NOTES Blank on reverse.
