Description: In 1963 my English teacher in 8th grade asked, "Who's read Tortilla Flat?" I raised my hand. No one else did. He said, "A little strong for a younger reader, isn't it?" He was referring to the strength of the subject matter and not the language used, which by that time in America was pretty tame. I thought nothing more of his comment because to me, it was about my childhood at a time and place - Monterey - where life was alive. Tortilla Flat was emblematic of a world in the 1960s that remained visible and coherent to anyone who took the time to wander the streets of Cannery Row, not part of the burgeoning tourist shops sprouting relentlessly at that time and growing to the monstrosity of today. Even to this day when life becomes seemingly stretched beyond recognition, I re-read three books by Steinbeck, Tortilla Flat, Cannery Row, and, of course, Grapes of Wrath to center myself in a time when there was far more certainty in the world. That's the power of this book to many and the reason it lives on so many years after Steinbeck's passing. That's quite a legacy, no? Buy it, read it, and love it. Dimensions 5-7/8 X 8-1/4 X 1-1/4 inches - a duodecimo size most common in this type of edition.
