Description: Amphora: A Collection of Prose and Verse Chosen by the Editor of The Bibelot. 4th edition. Published by Thomas Bird Mosher, Portland, Maine, 1922. Hardcover, 190 pages. Measures about 4 1/2" x 7". This copy is one of a LIMITED EDITION of 925 copies printed on Van Gelder hand-made paper in January 1922. The authors selected are an eclectic lot, as one might expect from Mosher, who not only edited The Bibelot but also ran one of America's finest small presses for many years. Numerous then-living authors are represented, along with writers more ancient and obscure. The list includes William Blake, Mary Coleridge, Richard De Bury, Havelock Ellis, Thomas Hardy, A.E. Housman, Lucy Blanche Littleton, E. Nesbit, Cardinal Newman, William Butler Yeats, and many others. Condition: There is no slipcase. The label on the spine is worn. The top of the spine is coming loose; this can be repaired by the purchaser. The original owner's name is written in ink on the front free endpaper ("Marguerite Woodworth 1924"). The inside pages are clean, with no pen or pencil notations. Thomas Bird Mosher (1852-1923) founded the first significant private press in America. Working from Portland, Maine beginning in 1891 and continuing to his death in 1923, Mosher published small, carefully designed books that were hand-produced as part of the Arts and Crafts movement. Many of the Mosher books were printed in limited editions. For more on Mosher, see https://thomasbirdmosher.net/ This volume, issued the year before Mosher's death and the end of his publishing program, is a terrific gift for the Mosher collector in your life.
