Description: Here we have a long-unavailable milestone of the underground rock scene of New Zealand, courtesy of THIS KIND OF PUNISHMENT: In the Same Room / 5 By Four, a CD released in 1987 by the Ajax label. This set does lovers of NZ rock a solid by bringing together two vinyl TKOP titles (released by Flying Nun in 1985 and 1987) on a single disc. This Kind of Punishment was a duo project consisting of brothers Peter and Graeme Jefferies, both of whom have made enormous contributions to the NZ underground in the last two decades. Peter is responsible for at least half a dozen great solo albums (including his masterpiece The Last Great Challenge in a Dull World, one of the Nineties’ finest records), while Graeme has notched up even more with his group the Cakekitchen. Spare yet astonishingly powerful at the same time, This Kind of Punishment’s music remains an unjustly ignored highlight of post-punk rock, building tension in ways not far removed from the likes of Joy Division and the Comsat Angels, but with their own distinct, restrained qualities. The recording's claustrophobic feel could earn the album a 'lo-fi' classification if it weren't for the fact that TKP relentlessly avoid the sloppy clichés that such a category might call to mind. The band avoid conventional drum rhythms at many points, relying instead on odd percussion boxes and Peter Jefferies' careful, imposing piano to support the low end along with the bass. The fourteen songs on this disc pulse and hum with an edginess enhanced by the rough, grainy 4-track recording quality and unusual arrangements, featuring the Jefferies siblings on guitar, bass, piano, violin and drums, with crucial support from the likes of Michael Morley (The Dead C), Alastair Galbraith and Shayne Carter. A dark thread of corrosive melancholy winds throughout, enhanced by the starkness of the sound and both brothers’ deep voices. The grim beauty of This Kind of Punishment’s music should not be missed by those who travel the darker pathways of the rock kingdom. This CD has been out of print for many years, with no sign of a reissue anytime soon. The disc shows some light wear (and has been priced accordingly), but plays without flaw.
