After The National soundchecked for their performance in Vancouver on June 5th. After finishing in June 2023, the band simply continued playing. Something was brewing: Aaron and Bryce Dessner's distinctive guitar parts met Bryan Devendorf's signature drum beat. As bassist Scott Devendorf got going, Matt Berninger started singing some lines that had been brewing in him for a few years. “ Smoke detector, smoke detector / All you need to do is protect her,” he intoned. Their sound engineer ran the recording and suddenly it was a 12 minute jam. They knew they had something special and soon took the live recording to Aaron's studio. They cut a few minutes but otherwise kept what happened on stage in Vancouver. That song, "Smoke Detector," is the culmination of "Laugh Track," the surprising second half of a double album that began in April with "First Two Pages of Frankenstein." It proved to be the final chapter of a work otherwise written alongside its sister album - the final act of a catharsis that shows what The National have been through over the past three years. Two years ago, the "Smoke Detector" line was one of the few scraps Matt was able to write during a crippling depression, at a time when the band was wondering whether they would ever make an album again. After the pandemic, their new faith in each other revitalized creative abilities. “Weird Goodbyes,” released back in August 2022, was their first breakthrough and the first taste of this new era. “We released it really quickly because it was like a baby born in the dark or something,” Matt laughs. “We had to show it to people.” But as they finally moved forward with this extensive work, they decided not to include "Weird Goodbyes" on the Frankenstein album. “It felt like the story had already been told. It was its own thing," Aaron says. “But it also felt like it had some connection to what we were doing. That was part of the logic for making another record - we wanted to give "Weird Goodbyes" its own home." "Laugh Track" is perhaps the most musically unconditional album the band has made in years. It's rebellious and yet light-hearted, but it contains as much rare, unbridled beauty as desolation. Thematically, there is no intentional separation between “Frankenstein” and “Laugh Track.” While Matt was looking for refuge on Frankenstein, here he has a new, clearer view of what matters. His urgent need for intimacy is compounded by an ever-increasing fear of the unreality of modern life. The characters on this album (no first names, apart from a tour manager named Alice - just "I" and "you") cover for each other, dream for each other and help keep up appearances - thereby fulfilling the promise of mutual care that is Matt on the Frankenstein closing song "Send for Me". If "Frankenstein" was a sign of the restoration of trust between the band's individual elements, the lively and curious "Laugh Track" is the confident product of that process and a statement of intent for now and the future.TRACKLISTING: 01.
