Description: Here's BORIS KARLOFF as that amazing gumshoe, Dectective James Lee Wong in..... THE MYSTERY OF MR. WONG (1939) The second in the series of Mr. Wong features starring Boris Karloff finds wealthy gem-collector Brandon Edwards gaining possession of the largest star sapphire in the world, the 'Eye of the Daughter of the Moon', after it has been stolen in China. Edwards, at a party in his home, confides to Mr. Wong that his life is in danger. During a game of Charades, Edwards is mysteriously shot dead and the gem disappears. Unknown to Wong, the jewel is in the possession of Edwards' maid, Drina, who intends to return it to China, but she is murdered also, and the gem is taken again. After one more murder—the suspect list is dwindling—Wong exposes the killer, turns him over to Police Inspector Street, and Wong orders his manservant Willy to return the gem to China. Detective James Lee Wong (Boris Karloff) must find the "Eye of the Daughter of the Moon," a priceless but cursed sapphire stolen in China and smuggled to America. His search takes him into the heart of Chinatown and to the dreaded "House of Hate" to find the deadly gem before it can kill again. The popularity of Asian detectives such as Charlie Chan and Mr. Moto prompted Monogram Pictures to purchase the rights to Hugh Wiley's successful James Lee Wong character. Boris Karloff appeared in five Mr. Wong mysteries while on hiatus from horror films. The Mystery of Mr. Wong is a 1939 American mystery film directed by William Nigh and starring Boris Karloff. I must mention that I am a fan of old movies and have been since I was 11. When I was 11 I started watching old movies on Channel 2 in the San Francisco Bay Area. They were shown on a TV program titled "Dialing for Dollars." My sister and I had so much fun watching old black and white movies on that show; my mother would give us her perspectives of those movies she had seen in movie theaters growing up during The Great Depression. This movie is a remake of the 1931 movie, "Murder at Midnight." When I realized that, I looked for the original movie on Amazon but it is not available at this time. I found it on YouTube. After watching the original, I returned to watch this one, which was rewritten to include Mister (James Lee) Wong. The two movies have different strengths. In the original, non Wong version, I was baffled as to whodunit until I realized that so many suspects were being killed off. There were few left who, however improbable, one of whom must be the murderer. I had no real clues, except the abilities needed by the murderer, but I did end up suspecting the right person before the movie revealed who it was. There are aspects to the original movie that make it worth searching for and worth watching, including deliberately humorous lines. Some of Boris Karloff's best roles were as a good guy, not bad guy or monster. This is one of his early "straight" roles and he pulls it off like Dashiell Hammett. A good story with good acting for pre-WWII. I love the Boris Karloff, Jame Lee Wong series of Monogram B-Mysteries. They are fun, clever, and humorous. FUN to guess who dunnit!!
