Description: Small Town USA WWI or WWII Home Front Family Flag Service Banner Mothers 42 Sons. Unique Original Item: Only One Available. The four-section panel type stitching on the red field of this flag seems to indicate that this is a WWI Service flag of which this type of stitching was the norm in 1917 rather than a WWII Service Flag which are always done on a single red field. It also looks to be a lot older than most WWII flags do. A service flag or service banner is a banner that family members of those serving in the United States Armed Forces can display. This banner having 42 stars is shaped like a flag and scaled as one as well as it is not shaped like any WWII Service Banner. This pendant is also unique as it is very large at five feet long like many US flags were in 1917. It is also made more to the shape of a real 1917 American School flag was back then rather than a long banner. Also, early 1917 Home Front Service Flags did not have the same basic size and shape requirements that WWII Service flags did as they were only invented during the Great War.Since there are 42 stars, this flag was more than likely made for a small community or small town in the USA as having 42 sons from a single mother would be impossible. The stars started one size but were reduced two additional times as more and more sons died, they became smaller and more crowded. The ruff look of the flag may be because of it continually being reworked and since it has the dimensions of a US flag rather than a banner, it may have flown instead of being just hung in a window as most were. Another reason, why I think it was flown like a flag and not hung like a banner is because, if it were hung from the white border as most WWII Service Banners are, around half the stars would be upside down. However, if it is flown horizontally, about 98% of the stars would line up better. So, if this is a WWI smallville USA banner, it could have flown outside near the city government buildings or city center for the whole town to see. Either way, I have never seen any WWI or WWII service flag with this many stars sewn onto it as their sons were drafted or died and not made after the fact. Extremely rare in so many ways. The Service flag or banner is officially defined as a white field with a red border, with a blue star for each family member serving in the Armed Forces of the United States during any period of war or hostilities. The banner was designed in 1917 by U.S. Army Captain Robert L. Queisser of the Fifth Ohio Infantry, in honor of his two sons who were serving in World War I
