Known affectionately as "Myojin-sama," the shrine was established in the 5th year of the Shōhei era (935 AD). After the defeat of Taira no Masakado, whose head was brought from Kyoto and buried near the shrine, the shrine gained respect from the local samurai. In the early 14th century, during an epidemic, it was believed that this was the result of Masakado’s curse, and the shrine was further honored.
