Description: SCARCE YOUNG MILL-WRIGHT’S AND MILLERS GUIDE by OLIVER EVANS 1826 COLLECTIBLE Up for auction is a rare hardback book entitled “The Young Mill-Wright’s and Millers Guide . Illustrated by Twenty-Eight Descriptive Plates” by Oliver Evans. Published 1826 by H.C. CAREY and J. LEA in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. About the Author: “Oliver Evans was a pioneer in the fields of automation, materials handling and steam power. He was one of the most prolific and influential inventors in the early years of the United States. He left behind a long series of accomplishments, most notably designing and building the first fully automated industrial process, the first high-pressure steam engine, and the first amphibious vehicle and American automobile. Born in Delaware on Sep. 13, 1755. Evans first came to prominence when he designed and constructed a fully automatic flour mill. Using bucket conveyor belts, Archimedean screws, rotating stirrers, and a variety of hoppers, his mill was able to receive grain, raise it to the top of the mill, distribute it to the milling machinery, grind it to different degrees of fineness, spread and dry the grain, and then package and distribute it, all without human intervention, except to turn the machinery off and on and make repairs when necessary. The entire mill was driven by a waterwheel. His efforts were recognized by George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, who both commissioned Evans to install a similar system in their mills. He received a patent for his automated mill (the third U.S. patent ever granted, signed by Thomas Jefferson. This novel concept would prove critical to the Industrial Revolution and the development of mass production.” About the Publisher: “Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania , Henry Charles Carey (1793-1879) was the leading 19th-century economist of the American School, and chief economic adviser to U.S. President Abraham Lincoln.
