Description: Reveries of Omar KhayyámCecil G. TrewNational Illustrated News/Kaloprint | Los Angeles | 192924 Signed Plates | First Edition Condition: Good+ Hardcover half bound in cloth with gold pebbled boards. Titles in black with reproduction print card pasted to front. Volume was initially published in portfolio format with loose pages, but this copy has been rebound with original portfolio boards and marbled green end-papers. Boards show minor scuffing throughout, and cloth is moderately dusty with fading to borders. Exterior is otherwise unsoiled, remaining free of stains or further discoloration. Print card is beginning to loosen at its corners, but remains nonetheless secure. Binding is quite strong, showing sound hinges and no loose pages. Some pages show sparse foxing to borders with a mild tan throughout, but interior is remarkably clean with bright, untarnished plates. All plates are signed in pencil by Trew with hand-drawn frames for each image. Given that Reveries was released in portfolio form with loose pages, it is more common than not for copies to have lost plates/pages over time. Our copy is no different, showing 24 plates out of 25 called for, a remarkable number given the volume's aforementioned tendency to lose plates. Missing plate is likely one of two assigned to verse XVII, for which we only have one. First trade editions of this text differ to some extent, with inconsistencies in verse-plate designations, plate duplicates, cover design, and title, amongst others. Volume is consistent with a limited "artist's proof" edition of 1,000 copies. However this copy is missing, or potentially never had, a title page and colophon, thus we cannot verify with certainty the exact edition of this copy. Nevertheless, this is an exceedingly scarce and wonderful, near complete volume in impressive, strong condition.
