Description: While attending the U.S. Army Reserve Officer's Training Corps (ROTC) Program at the Pennsylvania State University from 1978 - 1982, I participated in the U.S. Army's Simultaneous Membership Program that started in March 1980. This program allowed individuals to be a part of both the U.S. Army Reserve or National Guard and their college's ROTC program. Since I was planning to accept an active-duty U.S. Army assignment upon my graduation from Penn State and being commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, I enlisted into the Army Reserves in March 1980. The Senior ROTC Training Non-Commissioned Officer, SFC Gosnell, who was a Combat Infantryman, gave me this 1973 Columbus / Fort Benning GA Sheet 4048 IV MR 7 Map to practice my map reading and land navigation skills on a Fort Benning, GA map prior to my attendance at the U.S. Army Infantry One Station Unit Training Course at Fort Benning in May 1980. After completing Infantry Basic and Infantry Advanced Individual Training (AIT) courses on 28 August 1980, I was assigned to the U.S. Army Reserve's, Company B, 314th Mechanized Infantry Battalion located in Huntingdon, PA on 1 September 1980. I attempted to return this vintage 1973 Columbus / Fort Benning GA Sheet 4048 IV MR 7 Map to SFC Gosnell, but he said that I should consider this map as a graduation present for not only completing Infantry Basic and AIT but maxing out the Performance Oriented Infantry Qualification Test and graduating the 12-week course with honors. I kept this vintage 1973 Columbus / Fort Benning GA Sheet 4048 IV MR 7 Map in a sealed plastic bag with other topological maps inside my U.S. Army Map Carrying Case. After my separation from the Army, I stored my map case in a sealed plastic container with other military items and stored them in one of our smoke free homes. Since my wife and I relocated from Manassas VA to Fort Myers, FL, I no longer have a space to permanently store all my military training material or military service memorabilia. As a result, I am offering this original vintage 1973 Columbus / Fort Benning GA Sheet 4048 IV MR 7 Map for sale on eBay. As exhibited in the previous photographs, this original vintage 1973 Columbus / Fort Benning GA Sheet 4048 IV MR 7 Map is in very good condition for being over 50 years old. There are some minor marks or blemishes based on classroom instruction and personal use. This map was only used indoors and never taken outside. When not in use, this map was stored and protected inside a sealed plastic bag. This item would be a terrific addition for any novice or professional military collector.
