Rare, Secretary of the Navy Superior Civilian Medal for Valor, set. The set consists of ONE full size medal and a lapel button. The photo shows the front and reverse of the medal, you will receive ONE full size medal and a lapel button. This decoration, the second highest of the two Navy civilian valor awards, may be awarded to any private citizen, or any Federal government employee, who exhibits great courage and voluntarily risks personal safety above and beyond the call of duty, but to a lesser degree as to warrant the award of the Distinguished Civilian Medal for Valor. The act of valor must in some way be connected to DoN activities or personnel. The establishment of this medal, and the Distinguished Civilian Medal for Valor, has brought the Navy in line with the Air Force, which also has two civilian valor awards. The Distinguished Civilian Valor Medal and the Superior Civilian Valor Medal use the same ribbon, however the medallion and lapel button of the Distinguished are gold. NOTE TO COLLECTORS: This medal has been sold on ebay since 2002 with a NECK drape. While researching the military specifications for this medal, I discovered that the specifications called for a standard military drape (see photo). A call to DoN confirmed that a neck drape IS NOT USED. The same problem exists with the Navy Distinguished Medal for Valor and the DoD Medal for Valor. The Army Medal for Valor is the only decoration that uses a neck drape. The same medallion (gold) is used on the DoD Medal for Valor, Army Medal for Valor and Navy Distinguished Medal for Valor.
