Description: Early Hudson’s bay company fur trade copper forget from the Fort Albany fur trading post in Ontario, Canada. The Fort Albany trade post was built in 1670 on the southern shore of the Albany river. The fort was only accessible by water and was often called Port Albany. The fort still stands today as a tourist attraction. This Hudson Bay Company copper forget was on display with other fur trade items in the Somers, Connecticut Indian museum and the gorget came to the Chet Mulka collection. Obverse- hand graved “ Port Albany” The center has an early type of pewter of German Silver Trade turtle. The turtle was looked upon as good luck by the Indians of the Northeast Woodlands 3 1/2” Long 2” wide - two punched holes for neck suspension. Has a strong HB touch mark and also a strong PH touch mark. PH touch mark could be the mark of Pierre Huguet dit Latour who was a silver smith and did his work in Montreal from 1771- 1829.
