Description: Here we have a RARE Antique J. RABONE & SONS, Birmingham, England, 'ORNATE & FANCY' 2 FT - 2 Fold Brass Rule. The John Rabone and Sons Company was started in 1784 by Michael Rabone in Birmingham, England as rule and tool makers. The business was continued by John Rabone and his (John's) grandson, Eric Rabone. They were active from 1784-1953. This beautiful ornately designed rule is a 2 Foot - 2 Fold rule and is Maker marked on side: J. RABONE & SONS MAKER BIRM'm. The brass surfaces have a great aged patina. There are a couple of dents and scratches from use. There are only very, very minor little bends and in general the rule is straight. The thick brass hinge works just as it should and has a geometric pattern in the hub. Ornate hinge extensions flow out from the hub and have flower like designs. This ornate metal work is on both sides of the rule. The graduations and numbers are in 8ths on one side and 16ths on the flip side. The rule has a nice leg alignment disc in the center to keep the legs together. There was a second disc at the tips that has gone missing over the years. No owners marks.
