Description: 1963 Lyndon B. Johnson Inaugural Medal, Nov. 22, 1963, "The Inaugural Medal That Was Never Struck". In the months following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, and the subsequent Oath Of Office bestowed upon Vice President Lyndon Johnson, the U.S. Mint explored the possibility of producing an Inaugural Medal to fill the void in their Inauguration Medals series by producing one for Lyndon Johnson's Air Force One Oath of Office on Nov. 22, 1963. They had Gilroy Roberts, who engraved the Official1957 Dwight D. Eisenhower Second Inauguration Medal, create a model for a Johnson Inaugural Medal. Roberts completed the model for the Obverse of the Johnson medal, his signature is on the shoulder of President Johnson and the reverse re-used the design of the John F. Kennedy 1961 official Inaugural medal by Paul Manship. The result was the medal offered here, which is a sample of the would be Inaugural Medal that was created for the U.S. Mint and submitted for their consideration. Evidently the U.S. Mint rejected using this design in favor of the design that was ultimately used. One reason may have been that they were not pleased with the overall appearance of the medal or the Lyndon Johnson portrait. Whatever the reason, this design was dropped, and possibly this may be the only evidence of the proposed medal, as only a few would have been made. The medal is an electrotype medal, meaning it has a bronze surface over a heavy metal core, probably lead. The medal is 3-inches in diameter, and in Excellent condition except for a small test cut on the obverse rim. A rare U.S. Mint Medal.
