Description: P-40 WARHAWK in World War II Color by Jeffrey L. Ethell Published: Motorbooks International, Osceola, Wisconsin - 1994, First Edition. This softcover book measures 8 1/4" X 9" - 96 pages, with color photographs. What makes this book rare is it is signed by two Flying Tigers, The American Volunteer Group, pilots - Kenneth A. "Ken" Jernstedt and Robert F. "Bob" Layher. Note that Boby Layher autograph ink got transferred onto the opposite page near the propeller of the aircraft (see last pic). Kenneth A. "Ken" Jernstedt - WWII Flying Tiger Ace Pilot 10.5 Air Victories. He signed up with General Chennault and the American Volunteer Group (Flying Tigers). After arriving in Burma in late 1941 he was assigned to the 3rd Pursuit Squadron and was soon promoted to Flight Leader. His squadron was assigned to the Rangoon area immediately following Pearl Harbor and he was credited with his first aerial victory on December 23rd, 1941. On Christmas Day twelve Flying Tigers took one more than 130 Japanese fighters and bombers. While serving up and down the length of the Burma Road he was credited with a total of 10.5 victories and became Oregon’s first Ace Pilot. When the Army took over the AVG in July 1942 Jernstedt returned to the States where he accepted employment with Republic Aviation and flew as an experimental Test Pilot for the rest of WWII. While there he worked on every model of the P-47 except the A, and did a large part of the developmental work on the P-47N long range fighter. He also was a Test Pilot for the P-12, F4B, AT-6, TBD, SBU, F3F, F4f, P-40, P51, P-38, F6F, F4U and P-72. https://flyingtigersavg.com/jernstedt-kenneth-a/ Robert F. "Bob" Layher - Robert Layher was a pilot and Flight Leader in the 2nd Squadron of the American Volunteer Group. He sailed in September, 1941, and trained in Toungoo, Burma. Sent to Rangoon on December 28, 1941, and returned to Kunming in late February 1942. Sent to Karachi, India, to bring planes to China. Ordered to spend 3 weeks in Assam flying reconnaissance for evacuation of Burma. Was then sent back to China and flew bombing missions against bridges along the Burma Road. Sent to Chunking in June 1942, until AVG disbanded. Spent an extra 2 weeks in Kweilin helping the China Task Force get organized. Rejoined the Navy upon return to New York and flew as a Captain with American Export Airlines in the naval diplomatic run for the duration of the war. Flew a Sikorsky S-44. After the war, flew with American Airline on North Atlantic route which was purchased by Pan Am.
