Description: A very nice example ofa scarce mid-19th century map titled “Straits of Florida”, issued in 1852 bythe United States Coast Survey in a booklet titled Andrews’ Report – Maps,with three other maps, as part of a Treasury Department report on commerce byIsrael D. Andrews. Starting in the east, near Charleston South Carolina, the map traces thecoast of Georgia, the entire shoreline of Florida along the Atlantic, aroundthe Peninsula, then along the coastlines of Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana,Texas, the Gulf coast of Mexico and the entire Peninsula of Yucatan. The map alsoincludes the Bahamas, Cuba, and Jamaica. In addition to naming the various countriesand states, the map identifies major rivers, settlements (Galveston, Vera Cruz,New Orleans, etc.) and coastal islands. The border with Mexico is noted at theRio Grande. Interior details are sparse, with the exception of topography and otherfeatures in the isthmus of Tehuantepec, an important overland crossing from theAtlantic to the Pacific, and a primary transoceanic transportation point priorto the opening of the Panama canal. Condition: Good minus condition, lithographedB&W map, nice, clear impression printed on a single sheet and folded to fitin the booklet. Light, uniform age toning, slightly darker along folds, some areasof spotty foxing, a few pinholes along fold lines and at intersections,some ~2mm voids, one small wrinkle.
