Description: NGC ( F ) Carus AD 282 -283 Aurelianianus / Antoninianus Marcus Aurelius Carus (circa 222 – July or August 283) served as the Roman emperor from 282 to 283. In his brief rule, Carus achieved success in battles against Germanic tribes and Sarmatians along the Danube frontier. His life ended during a campaign against the Sassanid Empire, and according to legend his death was caused by a lightning strike. He was found dead in his tent during a thunderstorm and it is likely that he was either assassinated during a time of turmoil or died of natural causes. Grade: ( F) Fine - Certified, Graded and Encapsulated by NGC The aurelianianus was introduced by Aurelian as a replacement to the antoninianus in 274 A.D. and struck until 293 A.D. They were of an improved quality of silver plating (4.3% vs. 2.5%) and part of Aurelian's monetary reform. The two terms are often used interchangeably by collectors and dealers.
