Description: General John Milton Thayer was a Nebraska Territory pioneer and prewar Major General of the Nebraska Forces in the 1859 War with the Pawnee. During the Civil War he was Colonel of the First Nebraska Volunteers and promoted to brigadier general. He was an active combat commander with brevets for the Battles of Fort Donelson & Shiloh and the Vicksburg Campaign.
