Description: Here's an empty moving coil phono step up box for use with your Northern Electric R14849 plug in transformers. This box will function with any of the R14849 types, but the ones that will primarily be useful for MC step up are the A, AS and C models. The D can be useful for higher level MC cartridges without output above 0.5mV. This box has gain switches to put the primary coils in either series (lo) or parallel (hi). The ground switch in the middle selects how the aluminum box is grounded for shielding. In the middle position the box is completely separated from the audio grounds, which are also both kept separate from each other. In this position you'll have to run a separate drain wire from the SUT to your phono preamp ground post. For convenience you can also select "L" to ground the box to the left channel audio ground or "L+R" to connect the two audio grounds and the box all together. Usually connecting the box to one or both audio grounds does not cause problems. In general you don't have to worry to much about what the switch is doing, just hook up the box however you like, and put the ground switch in whichever position gives you the lowest noise.
