Please excuse any glare in the photos. This landscape painting depicts grazing cows near a cluster of oak trees. It is framed in a gold-finished frame. The exterior frame measurements are approximately 6 5/8 inches by 8 5/8 inches. The sight area is about 4 5/8 inches by 6 5/8 inches. Unpacked, it weighs 7.9 ounces. Verso, the black paper backing has an affixed pocket which contains artist information from Davenports Art Reference and another unknown publication. This would be a great addition to a collection of antique American fine art. Identification This piece is by the listed artist, Meyer Straus (1832-1905). The age of this undated painting is not known; the frame is vintage (more recent than the painting). Per askART, Straus was born in Bavaria in 1831, and he emigrated to the United States in 1848. He lived in Ohio, Missouri, Alabama, Louisiana, and Illinois before relocating to San Francisco, California in 1875. He worked as a painter of theatrical scenery in Chicago and San Francisco. In 1876, he traveled to Aspen, Colorado for a painting excursion. Once he returned to San Francisco in 1877, he decided to become an easel-painter full time. He established a studio and made sketching trips to locations in California and Oregon. Some of his artwork was used as illustrations in national magazines. He is known primarily for landscapes of northern California, but also for fruit and floral still lifes and paintings of figures, interior scenes, and missions. Straus passed away in San Francisco. He exhibited at the San Francisco Art Association from 1875 to 1910, at Mechanics' Institute in San Francisco from 1875 to 1897, at the California State Fair from 1879 to 1896, at the New Orleans Exposition in 1885, and at the Bohemian Club. His work is at the Nevada Museum of Art and at the Society of California Pioneers. Condition This antique painting displays nicely overall. It has soiling, as shown and as found, but it still has a good overall look. The frame has very light wear, and it looks great overall.
