Description: What started as a therapeutic program by a doctor, Hubert Hall, in 1904, the Marblehead pottery company eventually emerged into a sizable firm producing numerous shapes in earthtone colors up until 1936 when they finally closed. The company created many solid/blended shapes as well as highly sought after decorated and carved examples. During the 1920s the company was known to produce many pieces of production art pottery, however, continued the high quality recognized in their earlier works. Another article of which the pottery became very well-known was the production of tiles in assorted sizes with multiple themes such as nautical, nature, and birds. This particular example has a very detailed galleon ship set in a wood frame. I am unsure as the type of wood, my first guess would be white oak or beech. Pictures of the back reveal an original paper label as well as the incised logo commonly used on early works. I would estimate the production of this tile to be sometime in the 19 teens, however, I estimate the frame as to be a recent addition. The tile itself measures 4 5/8” square, the frame measures approximately 7 1/4” square. As a number of pictures reveal, I have removed the tile from the frame in order to accurately picture it alone. As several pictures reveal, three of the corners appear to have been filled due to chips. Two of these three corners had minor chips on the backside and do not affect the appearance of the front. I have also pictured an area on one corner which could possibly be a glaze skip or minor glaze flaking from use. When the tile is placed in the frame, the wood hides these flaws and only the ship itself can be viewed. Several other pictures show typical crazing and glaze pops some of which have minor coloration. All in all, these nautical tiles are not common in the marketplace, a great chance to pick up a classic example. please view all pictures as they are considered part of the description. Please check back to my listings often as I will be posting numerous fine examples of glass, pottery and porcelain in the near future. Thank you.
