Hornwort is by far the best of the oxygenating free-floating pond plants. Just place into water and let it drift! That's all! Submerged oxygenating plants are best with roots planted in shallow pots with a heavy loam clay soil, sand, aquatic substrate soil, or small pebbles no larger than aquarium gravel. This simply anchors them as the plants mainly clean the water. Many Submerged oxygenators or Floating Pond Plants will not likely last long in ponds with large koi or water turtles (protective plant bags may be needed). Anacharis and Cambomba are both very good rooted oxygenators as well.Shelf or Shallow water aquatic plants require several inches to a foot of water at or above submerged roots in planted soil with the rest of the plant visible above the water surface. These should provide color and style elements to your pond or water garden.Bog plants may require only an inch of two of water above the roots and many varieties can tolerate damp or very moist (well-watered) ground outside your water garden, at the edge of a pond or in a garden planter.Marginal plants (usually) require less water than Bog plants and prefer damp or moist (regularly watered) ground outside your water garden, near the edge of a pond or often in a garden planter. ************** Detailed Plant Descriptions ~ 46 Varieties **************(Know your USDA Hardiness Zone for your region!)Anarcharis or Brazilian Elodea (Egeria/Elodea densais) [USDA Hardiness Zones 5a-11] – Float or Submerge - A ropey/stringy plant that's short on looks, but an excellent oxygenator, and one of the very best pond filtration plants! This is deep green aquatic 'working' plant floats at the top of your pond or can be weighted to rise from the bottom of an aquarium or planted submerged in pots. It also provides top water cover to block algae growth and offers hiding places for small fish and young fry. My smaller goldfish like to lurk hidden surrounded by them. If you have red-eared sliders or other water turtles, they love to eat anarcharis as a treat! They handle hot southern outdoor temperatures in my small outdoor pond easily and without stress, and they also handled being frozen several winters ago for nearly a week without any damage. For more northern regions under heavy winter ice, planted plants will regrow in the spring from their roots, if the roots are planted in soil. Sorry, the sale of Anacharis Elodea is prohibited by law to: AL, AK, CT, ID, IL, IN, LA, MA, ME, MI, MS, MT, NE, NH, NY, OH, OR, SC, VT, WA, WI Anacharis Najas (Egeria Najas) [Zones 6-10] - Anacharis Najas or Narrow Leaf Anacharis is a green, stemmed Float or Submerged oxygenator with tiny green leaves. Slightly more skinny and spaced whorls than it's more common cousin Egeria Densa. An excellent aquarium or pond oxygenator! Anacharis helps to add oxygen to the water as well as aiding in algae elimination by quickly up-taking excess nutrients, as they both compete for the same nutrition. It is great for spawning and excellent cover for small fish. Anacharis Najas can be anchored with small weights or planted in the substrate. It will do well simply floating as it takes in nutrition from the hair-like leaves. It is a great plant for spawning and as cover for smaller fish. It reproduces by stem cutting and is sold as a bunched plant. A great addition for your pond or water feature. As available, grows slower - a more environmentally friendly and legal version of an excellent oxygenator for ponds or aquariums! Legal in 49 states except CA, unlike Anacharis Elodia (above)Aquatic Mint (Mentha Aquatica) [Zones 5-11] Sometimes called Watermint, is a perennial, aromatic EDIBLE herb grows well as a flexible Shelf/Bog/Marginal water plant with pretty purple flowers that will attract attracts Honey Bees, Butterflies and Fragonflies to your water garden feature! Attractive, green foliage is so lovely to smell when brushed up against or when planting other flowers nearby. Plant in full sun to part shade as a pond plant, in your flower bed or in an herb garden. Can submerge (with up to 2 inches of water above the top of the pot of mature plants) or plant in containers or margins. Prefers rich, loamy moist soil and will grow up to 12" tall. Note: Handling plant may cause skin irritation or allergic reaction with some people. Watermint plants have topical medicinal properties as a balm for sore muscles and an aid for cleaning wounds. The oils in the leaves add flavor to cooking and baking and leaves add a bright zing to salads. You can dry the leaves for use as a tea, which aids in digestion and calms ulcers. As a natural pesticide, it repels flies and mice seem to avoid the scent of the plant. Mentha aquatica distillations are also refreshing additions to mouthwash, body wash and even lotions. The pure refreshing scent can add a boost to potpourri and as an aromatherapy treatment the plant calms and refreshes. As with all mints, the oils and aroma help relieve stuffy noses and clear the breathing passages. Note: some people find the direct oils of this plant irritating to the skin. Illegal to sell to: CaliforniaAsian Ground Orchid (Bletilla striata) [Zones 6-9] Bog/Garden - Often called Chinese Ground Orchid, but also common in Japan and most of SE Asia, is native to forests and prefers rich, moist (but drained) soil but also seems to do well in rock gardens. For best results plant with 'Orchid potting mix' and greatly benefits from a top layer of humus on top of soil at least annually. Needs extra moisture when transplanted and in the early spring when establishing but reduce watering in late summer when the leaves begin to yellow. Prefers partial shade with morning sun exposure but will grow in full shade - doesn't like noon or afternoon summer sunlight ESPECIALLY IN SUMMER! Produces pink/purple flowers in late spring/early summer which will last until first frost. Will die in winter but should regrow the next spring, IF you apply a thick protective layer of munch over the plant after first frost. Grows aggressively from the roots and may overspread garden beds. Protect plant shoots from snails, slugs, deer and other foragers! Plant either in pots near your water garden or in the slightly dryer section of your bog so that the roots stay damp but not always wet. In the spring, the plant can be divided at the roots to propugate, but flowers much better if plants are left in clumps together. This plant has several medicinal uses, inlcuding treatment for ulcers and is also a useful organic antibiotic!Australian Feather (Myrio. Crispitum) [Zones 6-10] - sometimes called Australian Parrot's Feather, Water Milfoil, or more commonly Mare’s Tail, is an aquatic pond Shelf or Bog plant native to California (but is now found around the world including Australia and the UK) with an upright habitat and resembles parrots feather, but is smaller and slightly more delicate. This delightful pond plant has emerald-green, feathery foliage and grows to 6 inches tall in columns at the surface of the water, when planted in small pots! Australian Feathers have green, feathery stems that grow upright at the edge of your pond to help soften the rockery, or at the base of taller plants to conceal the container! Plant in a small pot of heavy loam soil and placed with up to 4 inches of water over the top of the pot. Plants will grow to about 6 inches tall and spreads 8 - 16 inches in the water in either full or partial sun.Australian Jumping Violets (Viola Hedera Australia) [Zones 10-11] Bog/Marginal Plant has tiny, light-lavender and white blooms on airy, round, green foliage that grow 1- 4 inches tall and can form a dense mat or ground cover. This lovely pond plant is pretty when planted at the base of taller specimens or in a container. Jumping Violets also grow well in pots in your pond with only the bottom of the planter in the water. Keep soil (any variety) moist, in full sun to full shade. Will die even from a light frost, so bring indoors in winter or treat this plant as an annual.Aztec Arrowhead (Sagittaria montevidensis) [Zones 8-11] – Shelf/Bog - also known as Spongy Arrowhead, Hooded Arrowhead, Long-lobed Arrowhead, Mississippi Arrowhead or Giant Arrowhead, has large, stiff, spear-shaped green leaves that are produced at the end of thick stems. They may grow 2 to 4 feet tall and should be kept in 1 to 6 inches water depth. Plant flowers bloom all season, are white with a large dark red spot at the bottom of each petal and have a yellow pistil and stamen. Plant is best planted in 2-gallon or larger containers in wet soil and placed in sun to part shade, in or out of your pond, but keeping roots at least wet. Prefers hot/semi-tropical zones (like Florida & SE Texas). Hard to initially establish, but reproduces readily when mature. Not recommended as a plant for beginning water gardeners.BacopaBladderwort (Utricularia spp.) [Zones 4-11] - A Surface floating carnivorous plant for beginners! Common in Texas, and prized for eating mosquito larvae, Bladderworts are annual plants that lack roots but have flowers on erect stems above the water. The entire floating plant is only about 6-8 inches tall. Flowers emerge above the surface and are yellowish with 3-lobes and a spur underneath. Underwater the leaf branches or petioles are fleshy and inflated with air which allows them to float. Leaves are whorled with 4 to 10 lateral leaves which fork often giving them a very delicate capillary appearance. Bladderworts are unique in that the underwater leaves bear small oval “bladders” that trap and digest very small (mostly invisible to the naked eye) aquatic creatures. When swimming prey, such as minute crustaceans, touch the trigger hairs surrounding the mouth of one of the bladders, a trapdoor-like flap of tissue swings open and the bladder quickly expands, sucking the organisms inside. Enzymes are secreted to dissolve the prey into nutritional elements for the plant. Among the fifteen species that occur in eastern North America, only this one has floats. Bladderworts are usually found in quiet shallow, acidic waters and can form very dense mats - can be a pest in smaller ponds, but excess coverage can be easily removed with a rake. Blue Daze (Evolvulus nuttallianus) [Zones 8-11] – A Garden (NOT A POND) Plant, is a hardy, low-growing, sun-loving, herbaceous perennial features true-blue flowers that stand out against the attractive, olive-green leaves. In cooler climates, it is often grown as an annual or in a container that is brought indoors for the winter. Situate this plant where it will stay nice and warm. In fact, if you have a hot spot in your garden where other plants wilt, replace those plants with this flower -- "Blue Daze" likes it hot. It does not suffer from serious pest or disease problems. DO NOT PLANT IN BOG! Extended periods of rain cause fungal problems to develop in the soil, which quickly destroy the shallow roots of the plant. Overwatering leads to the same result, as does poorly drained soils. Plants grown in containers should have drainage holes in the base to prevent this problem. BEE & BUTTERFLY FRIENDLY!Bluebell, Regular or Dwarf (Ruellia brittoniana 'Dwarf Blue') [Zones 8-10] - Dwarf Blue Bluebells (sometimes called Mexican Petunias) are native to South America and grow about 12 inches tall, making it a good choice for layering in front of taller plants at the Bog/Marginal edge of your water garden. Dwarf Bluebells will flower continuously throughout the summer months. This is a great marginal plant that can also be used outside of the water garden in moist soil with full/partial sun and is drought tolerant once established. Winters well as a houseplant in cold climates, but recommended outdoors only in the south. This and the ‘full-sized’ Bluebell plant are excellent butterfly attractors! This plant is illegal in California and cannot be sold or shipped there. Limited availability in the spring only.Blue Moneywort (Lindernia grandiflora) [Zones 7-10] - also called Savannah False Pimpernel and is often confused with regular Moneywort, comes from pinelands, marshes and swamps in South Georgia and Florida. Usually occurs in wetlands, but occasionally can be found in non-wetland areas. It is a ground hugging Bog or Marginal herbaceous perennial to 2-3 inches in height with 1/2 inch wide succulent light green heart-shaped leaves. The small violet-blue flowers with white markings rise above the foliage and are produced continuously while temperatures are warm enough for active growth. Plant in full sun to light shade (requires shade in hot locations like SE Texas). Evergreen in temperate and frost free climates. Grows best when given regular irrigation and tolerates waterlogged conditions. Useful as a flat groundcover between stepping stones or to surround rocks or steps in the landscape. Good for spilling out of containers and in hanging baskets and thrives in the moist boggy soil at the edge of a pond. Easy to grow & propagate.Cabomba or Fanwort (Cabomba caroliniana) [Zones 6-10] also known as the Carolina Fanwort - Submerge - This plant has fans of purple-backed lacy foliage, which are divided into narrow segments with green tops that are crowned with white flowers in summer. Grows slowly and can be heat/algae sensitive. Plant roots in heavy pots or directly plant in gravel on pond bottom. Cuttings removed from mature, healthy plants achieve propagation of the Cabomba plant. This plant helps oxygenate and clarify the pond water as well as to minimize algae growth. Cabomba plants provide much needed shade and protection to your pond fish, as well as providing a spawning material. Can spread 12-24". Not recommended as a plant for beginning water gardeners. Illegal to sell to: CA, CT, ID, MA, ME, MI, NH, NY, VT, WA, WICattail, Dwarf Chameleon Plant (Pink - Houttuynia Cordata Variegata or Green - Houttuynia Sp.) [Zones 4b-10] – Bog/Marginal - Chameleon Plant is a perennial plant with tri-colored foliage. Foliage is variegated and leaves are heart shaped, roots can grow long. This perennial plant is very showy with colorful leaves, the blooms are almost insignificant due to the lively foliage! Grows quickly and can become a pest if left to grow wild, up to 6-12" tall in moist soil and full sun. Great in pots and containers or at the base of taller specimens to hide the container. Plant has red, pink, green and cream colors variegated throughout the leaves. Looks great at the edge of the pond as it softens the rockery! Plant this lovely, perennial ground cover, in rich, moist, heavy loam soil, in full sun to part shade. Colors are more prominent in full sun. Chameleon Plant can be planted as a ground cover or planted in pots or fabric planters and placed on the shelves of your pond. Do not submerge pots! Great for naturalizing in moist bog areas – keep damp but do not overwater! Plant has a running spread and can overgrow if unpotted. Illegal to sell to: IL-City of ChicagoChiquita Punch Canna / Dwarf Orange Punch [Zones 7-10] – Bog/Shelf - has pretty flowers in citrus shades of orange with a hint of lemon zest! Really packs a visual punch! This canna makes a BOLD statement in the flower garden or in your pond. The bright orange flowers contrast nicely with the green foliage. Plant in moist soil in your flower bed or plant in baskets or containers with holes in your pond. Allowing the roots access to oxygen in the water will help your plants grow faster while the plant takes up extra nutrients in the pond, helping to eliminate algae. Plant in full sun. In northern climates, lift bulbs after first frost and store in a cool, dry place indoors. Replant in spring after all danger of frost has passed and then enjoy exciting color all summer long! Supplies limited.Colorado Water Lily (Hardy) (Nymphaea odorata 'Colorado') [Zones 4-11] – Submerge Center of Pond - A very winter hardy water lily that grows aggressively and has large, bold apricot/peach scented blooms that rise 3-5" from the water surface. Leaf pads are a dark green with burgundy marbling and will aggressively spread to cover your pond. Requires careful potting (at least a 2 gallon pot to start) and annual repotting with added lily fertilizer, for best growth/blooms. Lily should bloom daily, from late spring to late fall, closing its blossom at night. Shade tolerant, but prefers full direct sunlight. If in deep enough pond water (minimum of 18"), lily will regrow back every spring from its roots. These are very young daughter plants from my mature (10+ years) lily that grows in its own 200 gallon pond. A hardy and relatively easy to care for water lily, well suited for moderately experienced pond keepers! Cannot be shipped to: AK, HI, PR or Canada.Corkscrew Rush (Juncus effuses “Spiralis”) [Zones 4-10] - Corkscrew rush is a cultivar of a plant native to Japan that was bred for its whimsical foliage. The corkscrew rush is a very versatile plant. It thrives equally well in well-drained soil or Bog or Marginal areas. Perennial corkscrew rush makes an excellent plant for use near a water feature, in container gardens or even as an indoor specimen. Corkscrew rush plants produce best in full sun, except in zones with unrelenting heat. In the hotter areas, they will do just fine in a partially shady area or where there is shelter from midday sun. Perennial corkscrew rush thrives in any type of soil including sand, loam or even mixed clay. Extremely dry areas are not suitable for the plant unless you provide superior irrigation and ensure the soil doesn’t dry out. Corkscrew rush plants are not susceptible to many pests or disease and are very tolerant to most climates. Can be safely pruned for appearance.Corkscrew Vallisneria (Vallisneria Americana) [Zones 9-10] – Submerge - also called Corkscrew or Jungle Val, tape grass, or eel grass) with ribbonlike bright green leaves. The species gets its name not due to its curved leaves, but because of its spiral shaped floral stem. Corkscrew Val is grass green in color and can be a slow to fast grower, depending on nutrient and lighting conditions as well as CO2 supplementation. Val is also sensitive to transplant shock and may stop growing for 2+ months afterward. Plant the Corkscrew Val in bunches or singly in the mid-ground of the aquarium or pond for the best effect, but be careful not to bury the crown (where the plant stem meets the roots) in substrate as it will kill them. For optimal growth, Corkscrew Val requires a moderate level of light at 2 to 3 watts per gallon with full spectrum (5000-7000K) bulbs, if in an aquarium. Corkscrew Val will thrive with regular CO2 supplementation, plenty of light, and a nutrient rich substrate. Corkscrew Val will send out runners for propagation. Allow the new plant to develop a root system and leaves before separating it from the mother plant with very sharp, sterilized scissors, if you want to transplant. It will grow TALL to about 12"-16", see pictures and plan accordingly. Not recommended as a plant for beginning water gardeners.Creeping Jenny (Lysimachia nummularia) [Zones 2-10] – Bog – Often called plain Moneywort (see different plant below with the same name). It may only grow a few inches tall, but this super hardy perennial packs a big punch of color. Plus, unlike most perennials, creeping Jenny grows almost as well in the far North as it does in the South, producing a welcome mat of bright, gold foliage almost anywhere in the country. Creeping Jenny is a vigorous trailing plant that makes an ideal ground cover in sunny or partially shady locations. The plant also thrives in containers where its colorful leaves are allowed to tumble over the edge of a pot. In mid-summer, creeping Jenny also develops masses of cup-shaped golden flowers. Plant creeping Jenny in a sunny or partially sunny location. The plants prefer a rich, well-drained soil, but will spread almost as easily over poor soil. Creeping Jenny can become invasive, so plant it where you can control it from spreading through the garden. The plants don't mind wet soil and can be grown in boggy spots or at the edge of water gardens. Creeping Jenny retains its color all winter long and is tough enough to tolerate moderate foot traffic. Said to be unkillable – but it doesn’t like direct Houston summer sun. This plant is illegal in: MA, NH, NY, WICrystal Ball (Hydrocotyle Ranunculoides) [Zones 6-11] - Shelf/Bog - Sometimes called Variegated Buttercup Pennywort, is a lovely, low growing plant with small, round, scalloped leaves that are variegated in shades of green and cream. Crystal Ball Variegated Pennywort is a pretty, little, low growing plant that looks great winding through a waterfall or along stream-beds and in pots on the shelves of your pond or water feature. Looks great when planted at the base of taller plants in pots to hide the containers! in moist, loam soil in full sun to part shade. Roots of the plant can be submerged in up to 3 inches of water on the shelves of your pond, planted around the waterfall or in the stream bed of a natural stream. Roots must be consistently moistDwarf Horsetail Rush (Equisetum Scirpoides) [Zones 3a-11] – Bog - Horsetail Rush is a lovely marginal plant with dark-green, jointed, stems that resemble bamboo, A delightful plant that grows 8-10" tall. Looks amazing when planted in containers as an architectural feature in contemporary landscapes. Horsetails love moist, loamy soil with a few inches water above the soil. Plant in moist soil or with up to 2" of water above the top of a 6" wide as well as 6" deep container and place in full sun to full shade. Grows well and is evergreen in most climates. Plant 4-12" apart when mass planting for a hillside or bank. Place in containers in your pond or yard to keep plant contained.Firecracker Plant (Culphea Ignea) [Zones 9-11] – Bog/Marginal - Blooms All Summer! A wonderful big plant for sun or shade with lots and lots of blooms! Tubular flowers in shades of light pink attract hummingbirds and butterflies! Foliage is medium-green and airy. Grows 18-24" tall, with bushy, green foliage. Big and loud – a plant that makes a strong statement! Grows in the pond or in your garden! Plant in moist, loamy soil in full sun to part shade in or out of the pond. If placing in the pond, only submerse the roots in water. Recommend you plant in a very large container (5+ gallons) as this plant can overgrow. Limited availability in the spring!Forget Me Nots, Blue (Myosotis Scrip.) [Zones 3-9] - Bog/Shelf - Aquatic Blue Forget Me Nots have tiny, sweet, blue blooms and delightful, airy, green foliage. They grow beautifully in containers or baskets at the base of a waterfall, on stream beds or at the edge of a pond to soften the rockery. Plant in moist soil or with roots in shallow water in part sun to full shade. Easily reseeds in soil for blooms all summer long until frost! This plant hates Houston summers and (here) needs full shade. This plant is listed as an illegal invasive species in CT, MA, & WIFrogbit or Frog's bit (Limnobium Spongia) [Zones 5-9] - Shelf - Has small, emerald green, round to oval leaves and look great when planted in small containers and placed on shelves in your pond about 6-12” deep. Very similar in appearance/growth behavior to Water Poppy, but smaller leaves & less colorful blooms. Leaves float beautiful across the surface of the water. An excellent source of nutrition for most turtle species and larger koi fish. Very easy to grow! To protect them from koi use a floating plant barrier. May not bloom it’s first year. Benefits from Water Lily fertilizer tabs in it’s soil. This plant is illegal in California and cannot be sold or shipped there. Golden Club (Orontium Aquaticum) [Zones 6-10] – Shelf - A beautiful and unusual plant with dark green, velvety leaves that are 4-6" wide and about 12" long. The flower is actually a spadix and is bright, golden-yellow and club shaped, hence the name "Golden Club". Plant this unusual pond plant in a large container or pot (1 gallon size) or fabric planting bag, using heavy loam soil and place in full sun to part shade, under 6-12" of water. Will die from even a moderate frost, but returns from it’s roots. Not recommended as a plant for beginning water gardeners.Hornwort (Ceratophyllum demursum) [Zones 4b-10] - Float/Submerge - is a green aquatic plant with long roots that can either float at the top of your pond or can be weighted to rise from the bottom of an aquarium or planted in submerged pots at the bottom of a pond or fishtank. It is an excellent filtration and oxygenator plant for removing biological debris from your pond! In the summer and fall the plants will bloom with small white flowers! Note: I use Hornwort rather than the larger Anacharis water plants in my outdoor turtle pond because my water turtles don't like to eat these, where they will (happily) eat my expensive Anacharis, and they provide excellent algae cover, filtration and oxygenation for my small feeder goldfish and minnows in this pond. Planted in an indoor aquarium, this plant does extremely well also, providing lurking places for smaller or my shy freshwater fish while providing filtration and oxygenation - but in an aquarium it prefers to free-float and tends to shed, so use aquarium weights! They take full sun well in spring/fall, but in my opinion, they prefer growing in about 50% shade during hot summer weather (at least in SE Texas). Lemon Bacopa (Bacopa caroliniana) [Zones 7-10] also known as Water Hyssop, is a tropical Shelf or Bog plant hardy in zones 8-11. My favorite water plant! It is fast growing and gets its name from the intense lemon scented foliage reminiscent of eucalyptus. Bacopa leaves are succulent and relatively thick. Leaves are elliptical, and are arranged oppositely on the stem. Grows to about 6 inches tall, and can be grown in full sun to partial shade. These water garden plants are both submerged oxygenators and bog plants. The plants enjoy light and will grow to the surface and slightly above the surface. Great for protecting small fish and adding wonderful color at the base of other bog plants. These pond plants can be grown in creeks and streams as roots/stems are anchored below the water. Can be planted as a creeping plant with other taller bogs. Wonderful lemon scented leaves, a true aquatic herb. Lemon Bacopa can grow well in a variety of water depths from totally submerged to barely underwater. It is a creeping plant that looks wonderful in clusters. The ball-shaped bright blue flowers are small, and have 4-5 petals, and bloom all summer. It is good accent plant for the pond and excellent for containers because of its trailing habits. This plant grows year around in warm climates. In cold areas, cut several tips of the plant and place them in a cup of water in a warm, sunny location. They will root and grow during the winter. Replant them in a pot outdoors when the chances for freezing weather have passed. In SE Texas, it will regrow from its roots in the spring after a mild freeze. Propagation during outdoor growing seasons is done by root division, spring through summer or by stem cuttings - just break off a stem and put into water. It is also used as an aquarium plant, so if you have an aquarium, you could plant it in there during the winter months.Marsh Marigold (Caltha Palustris) [Zones 3-9] – Bog/Shelf - Marsh Marigold is a perennial plant has lovely, sunny blooms in the early spring along with attractive green foliage and adds a cheerful touch in the pond! Grows 10-16" tall in full sun to part shade. May wilt in the extreme summer heat but will make a comeback in the cooler fall weather! Marsh Marigold is an excellent pond plant for cooler climates and does extremely well in zones 3-9. Plant this perennial plant in a 1-gallon container or 8" fabric planting bag using heavy loam soil. Place in the pond with a couple of inches of water over the top of the pot in full sun to part shade. This plant needs some clay in the soil to grow (Topsoil mixed with all-natural clay kitty litter where clay is the only ingredient can help amend your soil. 50% topsoil to 50% clay kitty litter ratio to make heavy loam soil. Does not like high heat or direct sunlight in southern regions! It will go dormant in summer but will return the following spring.Marsh Mermaid (Proserpinaca palustris) [Zones 7-10] also known as Mermaid Weed or Saw-Tooth Hygro – Submerged/Shelf - this plant has the potential to make a dramatic statement in any tank in which it is planted. Its leaves start out a vibrant green color with choppy, serrated edges. When allowed to grow under high-intensity lighting, the leaves will become more bristle-like, resembling tiny, delicate combs. Additionally, the leaves will gradually change from just green to a variety of pink and golden hues. Tadpoles LOVE to munch on this plant! Especially bullfrog tadpoles! It is found in still or slow-moving water of lakes, rivers, ponds in eastern most and southern North American waters. As with many other emergent aquatic plants, the submersed / immersed foliage have quite different morphologies. Above the water they are wide broad leaf and the submersed are thin and toothed. Very cold tolerant. If kept under insufficient lighting and/or water lacking in nutrients, Mermaid Weed tends to shed its leaves. Carbon dioxide injection is highly recommended for this plant to truly thrive. Mermaid Weed grows at a moderate to slow pace, so propagating doesn't need to be done too often. When propagation is needed, this plant should be propagated much like other stem plants. The plant grows in shoots that can be trimmed and replanted into your substrate. The vibrant tops of the stems can be cut off and replanted to spread the colorful parts of the plant around. The stem bottoms can be thrown out or left in the substrate to give the plant a more bushy texture. This plant is considered moderately difficult to grow and maintain, so it may not be ideal for beginning aquatic plant enthusiasts. No other sellers for this plant on eBay! Moneywort (Bacopa Monnieri) [Zones 8-11] – Bog/Shelf plant. A quickly growing tropical plant that reproduces from stem cuttings and has small delicate white flowers. Plant in full sun to part shade. This plant can be planted in soil above or below the water in small containers or fabric planting bags. This plant can also be also fully submerged and used as an oxygenator in ponds and aquariums. Place the containers a couple of inches beneath the surface of the water. Beautiful, round, green leaves on this flowering plant that look great on borders of ponds when potted. Great for adding texture on the surface of the water or in pots near water garden rocks or your waterfall. Sorry, the sale of Moneywort is prohibited by law to: CAMontana Butterfly (Nymphoides indica) [Zones 8-11] – also known as Variegated Water Snowflake, is a lovely small Submerged floating pond plant with one inch in diameter, delicate, white, fringed blooms that stand 1/4 to 1/2 inch above the green, variegated foliage that look like small lily pads. The plant has a 12 - 24 inch spread and the pads are small, usually 2 -3 inches in diameter. Montana Butterfly blooms all summer long until frost. Though this plant appears to float on the surface of the water, it must be planted in soil. Native to the southern hemisphere, the name Montana makes little sense, though it has been called that here in the United States for some time. Excellent for small ponds or container water gardens in warm temperate zones. This plant may not be ideal for beginning aquatic plant enthusiasts. This plant is illegal in California and cannot be sold or shipped there. Orange Butterfly Flower (Asclepias Curassavica) [Zones 9-11] Mexican Butterfly Flower (also known as Butterfly Weed, Mexican Milkweed, Tropical Milkweed, Scarlet Milkweed, Blood Flower, Swallow-wort, Butterfly Blood Flower or Silkweed) is a lovely tender, evergreen perennial in the south and it is a member of the milkweed family. Lovely flowers in hues of red, yellow and orange amidst attractive green foliage, grow from summer until frost! Mexican Butterfly Flower is a favorite among all hummingbirds and butterflies, especially Monarch butterflies! Grows easily in the pond or out, and loves full sun! Plant in moist, loam soil in full sun to part shade. May be planted in containers and placed in the pond with an inch or two of water over the top of the pot. The foliage and flowers must stay above the waterline. Mexican Butterfly Flower is native to South America and is not winter hardy in the north! Monarch butterflies will lay their eggs on the Mexican Butterfly Flower, as it is a main food source for them. Mexican Butterfly Flower can be brought indoors in the north and placed in a south facing window and replanted outdoors the next spring. Mexican Butterfly Flower grows 18 - 30 inches tall in the south, usually a little shorter in the north. Parrot's Feather (Myriophyllum aquaticum) [Zones 6-11]. Shelf or Bog - This tropical South American plant will certainly add a pop of color to your water garden or aquarium tank! It is a lovely light green aquatic plant with long roots that can either free-float at the top of your pond or can be weighted to rise from the bottom of an aquarium or planted in submerged pots. It is an excellent filtration plant to remove biological debris and inhibit algae growth in your pond. The ends rise up out of the water to catch the sun and they provide extremely nice vertical structure for your pond! My fish love to bask and lurk in the plants just below the surface – excellent for protecting minnows or smaller fry from predators! It seems to love the sun and even SE Texas in summer isn’t too hot for it to thrive! Plant stalks may normally turn beet red during summer. They also handled being frozen a few winters ago for nearly two full weeks without any damage – usually after a hard freeze new shoots will grow back from the roots in the spring. Sorry, the sale of Parrot's Feather is prohibited by law to: AL, CO, CT, ID, IL, IN, ME, MA, MI, MT, NE, NH, NM, NY, OH, OR, VT, WA, WI & Canada Pickerel Rush (Pontederia cordata) [Blue Zones 4-11] [White Zones 5-11] [Pink Zones 8-11] – Bog - is an attractive very hardy and low maintenance native North American plant that grow in clumps with thick to flat stems and bears blue spiked flowers from early summer well into fall. The foliage is glossy and dark green with an arrowhead-shaped leaf and grows 24 to 30 inches high. The flower spires are a deep to soft blue and rise several inches above the body of the rush. The individual flowers are about 1 inch across and elaborately-beautiful, reminiscent of an orchid and last well in water when cut. Pickerel rush is edible, the seeds can in fact be eaten like small nuts, boiled with rice, or ground up & added to flour. Tender young leafstalks are edible either raw or cooked. Any part of the plant can be cooked in stews. The seeds are also preferred food for waterfowl and the nectar attracts bees and butterflies. When the plant is partially submerged, the floating leaves provide important shade to prevent excess algae growth. These rushes can tolerate almost anything except full shade and drought but should be kept in deep pots with heavy rich soil where the roots can remain moist. You can also submerge the entire pot and just let the broad leaves float out around the plant. Word of caution, pickerel rush can grow prolifically in the warmer climates, taking over other places that you have placed other plants. For this reason, and for ease of use, plant them in 2-5 gallon pots to restrain excessive rhizome growth. Attractive, lush, green foliage with soft- pink flower spikes that bloom regally above the lush foliage on this popular pond plant! Flowers bloom all summer long attracting butterflies and hummingbirds to your water garden! Grows 18-36" tall with an 18" spread. Often considered a mainstay in the water garden, as it adds color and texture as well as vertical interest. Pink variety “Pink Pons” is not winter hardy north of zone 8. Sorry, the sale of Pickerel rush is prohibited by law to: CA or PR Now available in Blue/Purple, White, or Pink bloom varieties!Primrose Creeper (Ludwigia Peploides) [Zones 7-11] (also known as Floating Primrose or Creeping Water Primrose) is a Submerged plant native to the Americas and can be found in the wild in streams, creeks and ponds throughout the United States as well as South America. It has cup shaped, sunny-yellow, five petaled blooms that are 1 inch across, that bloom throughout the summer months (June through August and often through September) on stems of lovely, glossy- green foliage. Primrose Creeper grows very quickly in warm water to 10 inches tall, if planted in a large soil filled container in shallow water. At depths below 6 inches they will simply spread--once they hit the surface of the water. Grows well in full sun to part shade in moist, prefers loam/muddy soil (blooms heavier in full sun). Grows very quickly and may be better suited for larger ponds, unless you are able to keep it trimmed back throughout the summer months (primrose creeper may be cut back at any time).Pink ArrowheadPink LaceRain Lily, Pink - Zephyranthes grandiflora – includes a genus of about 70 species native to southern North America, Central America, and South America, with common names including rain flower, rain lily, and zephyr lily. This variety may have originated from Cuba or tropical Mexico. Pink rain lily is a perennial Marginal, with a tuft of outward-spreading grassy foliage growing from a tunicate bulb with reddish skin. The 4-6 long, narrow, strap-like green leaves are slightly glossy or shiny and may be reddish at the base. The foliage may be persistent or die back, depending on the conditions. Each pink flower with a white throat can be up to 4 inches across. Each has 6 tepals (3 sepals and 3 petals that look the same), a long white style with a three-parted stigma that thrusts out to one side, and floppy, golden anthers. The flowers open out flat at midday and close in the afternoon. Although each flower only lasts one to a few days (depending on temperature and sunlight), there can be multiple flushes of blooms throughout the season. Although they tolerate dry conditions, foliar growth and flowering will be improved with regular watering and fertilizer. Plants need to be protected from frost, bringing those in containers indoors before the first frost in order to keep the foliage growing. Plants kept in containers over the winter should be kept on the dry side and watered infrequently until spring. Plants in the ground should be dug after the first frost kills the leaves and then should be stored for the winter in slightly moist peat or vermiculite in a cool location.Red Ludwigia – (Aquarium plant) Ludwigia repens is a very common stem plant that is used to add a bit of red color to an aquascape in low-tech aquariums. It is very difficult to find a stem plant with red coloration that will grow in aquariums that are not injected with CO2 and fertilized regularly, however, red ludwigia fits the bill nicely. The intensity of the red depends on the lighting and nutrients, but it still is a nice accent plant even in relatively low-light conditions. The red color is usually most intense towards the top of the plant with the lower portion being dark green in color. It is a stem plant that can grow to 20+ inches in height. Red ludwigia can also grow immersed and will grow above the aquarium water if given the chance in small aquariums. For me, this plant would not grow well until it was planted in an outdoor glass aquarium tank that gave good morning/midday light. Indoors (in a fish tank) it grew adequately, but remained nearly entirely green in leaf color. Overall, Red Ludwigia (Ludwigia repens) is a very versatile stem plant that is a great fit for most aquariums and some outdoor ponds with shallow depths and/or excellent sunlight. Plant will propagate easily by breaking off 6" or so of top stem and replanting at least an inch of the end stalk with white hair roots into sand/soil/substrate.Rotala, Pink Sprite (Rotala indica) [Zones 8-11] also called Roundleaf Toothcup, or Dwarf Rotala, is an extremely location flexible Submerged/Shelf/Bog/Marginal pond plant with red-green coloration for aquariums or ponds. Grows well either underwater in a tank or in damp sand/soil! The leaves beneath the surface of the water will be very different than those growing above the water. The leaves above the water will be more round in shape and green in color, beneath the surface of the water the leaves become stellate or sword shaped. Dainty, red-ish/violet flowers form on the plant that is above the surface of the water over summer months. Loves partial to near full Houston sun... as long as the roots stay wet.Sensitive Fern, Giant (Neptunia aquatica) [Zones 9-11] – Bog or Shelf – This delicate but easy-growing tropical plant floats on the surface or can be planted in a container in shallow water and also grows along streams or on the edge of the pond or bog. The fern-like leaves close in the evening. These plants are great for surface coverage and algae elimination. They also provide a protection from predators for koi and other fish—especially important for vulnerable young fish. Small tufted yellow flowers appear during the warm summer months. Will not do as well in fast moving water or near waterfalls as the movement will cause the leaves to stay closed up. Light Requirements: Full Sun to Part Shade; Height: 1"-4" tall with very wide running spreadUmbrella Palm (Cyperus involucratus) [Zones 9-11] is a marginal Bog or shelf plant that needs damp or wet soil to thrive. They grow to about 36" in height fairly rapidly and expand quickly by their roots and will fill any space it has available to grow. I suggest planting them in large potted containers next to your pond or placed inside your bog area to restrict their growth enthusiasm. I grow mine in external large containers on the afternoon side of my pond to provide a little shade for my pond from the Houston summer sun, but they'll thrive just about anywhere you place them. They will die in winter after only a slight freeze but they will return to growth in the spring from their roots, at least mine do. Plants in large/heavy ceramic pots on concrete patios may survive freezes up to Zone 5 (in theory), but to be safe, bring plants indoors during hard freezes. Sold as young shoots (less than 12" length) or semi-mature (13"-36" length)Variegated Sweetflag, Dwarf (Acorus gramineus 'Variegatus') [Zones 5-11] - A miniature version of Variegated Sweet Flag, this attractive bog plant has tufts of green and white foliage reaching up to 12" tall. The hardy plant is deer resistant and does well in partially submerged environments up to 6” deep (mature plants only). The Dwarf Variegated Sweet Flag is evergreen in Zone 6 and above and adds color all winter to the edge of the water garden or stream bed. The sale of Dwarf Sweetflag is prohibited by law to: AK, CA, HI & PRWatercress (Nasturtium Officinale) [Zones 6-11] is an edible plant, either by the dark, leafy greens or by edible sprouts. Watercress is also considered a perennial herb. Watercress is considered the healthiest, green leafy vegetable on the planet. It is an aquatic or semi-aquatic plant that grows in shallow water or moist soil. May grow 18 - 36 inches tall and produces small, green and white flowers. Once the plant produces flowers, the leaf becomes bitter. Plant Watercress in loamy soil, in shallow water (2 - 4 inches of water over the roots) in full sun to part shade. Can benefit from regular fertilizing. Illegal in ConnecticutWater Celery (Oenanthe javanica "Flamingo") [Zones 6-11] – Also known as the Flamingo Plant, Java Dropwort, Water dropwort, Water Parsley, Chinese Celery or Variegated Water Celery, this is a colorful, low spreading plant typically planted in water gardens partially submerged on a Shelf or as a Bog plant. The plant prefers full sun to light shade, wet conditions (including shallow water), and soil containing sandy loam, silt, or mud. Growth and development are fairly rapid during the late spring and summer. Slow-moving water or stagnant water without waves enables this plant to establish itself. It will also develop on soil that is consistently moist. In some locations, this plant may be invasive. More flowers are produced in sunny locations. The colorful, serrated leaflets of the Celery pops with beautiful pink tips! About mid-summer, tiny white flowers in umbels bloom. It's a popular favorite for Koi ponds since it makes a nutritious snack for hungry mouths. Some gardeners recommend rotating two planters - keeping one in the pond for koi and another kept away from koi and allowed to grow back - to maintain a constant supply on hand. Water Celery is fast growing so take care in placement and expect plenty of spread. When placed properly, the Water Celery makes an excellent ground cover and a great choice for bog filters. Cooking: The green leafy parts have a celery like flavor that goes great in salads and on sandwiches. Tender green stems cut finely can also add a bit of texture and unusual flavor to salads. Harvest and chop the leaf & stems & add to stir fries, soups, curries & casseroles. The stems will tend to keep their texture after cooking. Leaves & stems a good source of protein with vitamins A, B, & C, iron, calcium, phosphorous & potassium. Cooked white roots are a source of carbohydrate. Plants will grow fastest in wet soil under direct sun. This plant is considered moderately fragile and difficult to grow and maintain, so it may not be ideal for beginning aquatic plant enthusiasts The sale of Water Celery is prohibited by law to: CA & WisconsinWater Clover, 4-Leaf (Marsilea drummondii) - coming soonWater Clover, Dwarf 4-Leaf (Marsilea crenata) - coming soonWater Clover, Varigated (Marsilea mutica) [Zones 5-11] – Floating or Bog - is actually technically a fern, but it floats in water with the appearance of a lucky four-leaf clover! Also works well planted in soil in a bog. It is very hardy and loves full sunlight and will grow either fully or partially submerged. If planted in earth or gravel it will grow voraciously and cover the surface of your pond or water garden and inhibit algae growth and provide shelter/shade for fish. If planted in soil the clover should be winter safe, regrowing from rhizomes in the spring. The clover blooms very nicely most of the summer and into the fall and this will attract bees and other insects, especially dragonflies. Sale is for one 2” or 4” square root plug of about 5/12 stalks plants. The sale of Water Clover is prohibited by law to: OK, LA & WAWater Garlic (Tulbaghia Violacea) – Bog/Marginal - Also called Society Flower, has lovely, lavender-pink blooms atop green, narrow, grass-like foliage. Society Flower is native to South Africa. Society Flower blooms all summer long and grows with a clump-like habitat. Airy foliage on Society Flower has a garlicky scent when brushed up against. (Flowers and leaves are edible and have a mild, garlic taste). A delightful addition to your summer garden, bog area, in containers in your pond or in herb gardens. Plant your Society Flower in moist, loamy soil in the bog area of your pond, or in the pond in loam soil in containers-- with an inch of water over the roots. Plant in full sun to part shade. Blooms best in full sun! Great in the landscape as borders or to soften the rockery in a rock garden or in containers and grows to 18 inches tall. Keep soil moist during dry periods.Water Leather Fern (Acrostichum danaefolium) [Zones 9-11] - This large fern is native to parts of the southern U.S. and will add a lush, tropical look to any water garden. Native to southern North America in Bog or Marginal well-watered areas. Supply very limited – plant quickly grows too large to ship. Dislikes strong direct summer sunlight in SE Texas. The sale is prohibited by law to: CA, HI, MT, OR, PR, WA, WY and UTWater Papyrus, Dwarf (Cyperus Haspan) [Zones 8-12] - is a tall-growing pond plant that adds a nice vertical structure to your water garden feature. Dwarf Papyrus has feathery, frilly, mop tops that appear on slender, long, green stems on these fabulous, viviparous, pond plants. Dwarf Papyrus adds texture and interest as well as an unusual look, adding a hint of the tropics to your water garden setting! Dwarf Papyrus grows 18 - 24 inches tall with a 12 - 18 inch spread. Dwarf Papyrus looks great in planters or in moist soil in your bog area. Considered an annual in the north and will overwinter indoors as a houseplant with enough light! They grow fairly rapidly and expand quickly by their roots and will fill any space it has available to grow. Sold as young shoots (less than 12" length) or semi-mature (13"-24" length)Water Poppy (Hydrocleys nymphoides) [Zones 8-11] is a tropical aquatic plant good for Shelf or Bog locations in your water garden, ponds, marshes, or water features. This flower will float at the water line, creating wonderful visual stimulation in the garden. It is a compact, day blooming tropical lily that is native to South America. The Water Poppy is a fairly fast growing floating plant that develops thick, shiny leaves approximately 2" to 4" wide along long, trailing stems. It has short-lived, almost cup-shaped cream-yellow flowers with a contrasting red and brown center that stretch 2 to 2-1/2" above the water's surface. The flowers bloom between June and August, though the plant thrives year-round in warmer climates but it would benefit from over-wintering indoors in a shallow tub with good light, as it is susceptible to even brief frost exposure. Frost and freezing temps will kill the surface leaves but the plant will regrow in the spring, if rooted in soil. For optimal growth Water Poppy prefers being planted in rich soil in tubs or round, shallow, solid containers of 3 gallons or more, in 6-12" of water. The Water Poppy will survive in water up to 12 to 15" deep, but prefers shallow water conditions 4" to 8". In calm water in full sun in a pond it can spread up to 6 feet. Like other floating plants, the Water Poppy helps shade your pond and fish and creates a safe haven and spawning area protected from birds and other predators. Can mature slowly and might not bloom the first summer season planted! Also benefits from using Water Lilly type fertilizers. The sale of Water Poppy is prohibited by law to: OK. This plant may not be ideal for beginning aquatic plant enthusiasts. No other sellers for this plant on eBay!Water Purslane (Ludwigia palustris) [Zones 3-11] – sometimes called Water Primrose, Marsh Purslane or Marsh Seedbox is a Shelf/Bog plant distributed in virtually all the world in boggy habitats and is common across most of the USA and southern Canada, except for the Rockies. Often misidentified and sold as numerous other common water plants (including red ludwiga). This is a herbaceous perennial plant about 3-12" long that branches occasionally. When it is out of the water, its stems and leaves sprawl across the ground; within shallow water, it ascends toward the surface, where its upper stems and leaves usually poke above the water. Plant prefers full sun to light shade and wet conditions with sandy or silty soils with continual moisture as found along lakes, ponds, streams and rivers. This plant requires either wet muddy ground or clear shallow water (only a few inches deep). The foliage can become more red when it is exposed to sunlight. Most growth and development occurs during the summer and early fall. The plant serves as forage for aquatic insects and is a good filtration plant. Excellent northern climate plant!Water SpriteWhite Fairy Lily (Zephyranthes Candida) [Zones 7-11] – Bog/Marginal – Native to Central/South America, White Fairy Lilies or White Rain Lilies have lovely white, crocus-like flowers on this pretty little plant. Essential for planting a fairy garden and excellent bog ground cover near your pond! The foliage has green, needle-like leaves. Plants will grow 6-10" tall in full sun to part shade and blooms mid to late summer. Adds a whimsical touch to your water garden feature! Perfect for bogs or rain gardens! Plant these (Zephyranthes Candida) flower bulbs in rich, loamy soil, in full sun to part shade (also mix in some clay-based cat litter to help retain moisture). Keep regularly watered, but do not permanently submerge roots. Great for naturalizing and planting in mass, in a moist, bog area or wetland. Grows relatively slowly... might not flower the first year after transplant.White Turtlehead (Chelone Obliqua) [Zones 5-9] also known as Turtlehead Plant, is an upright growing plant with delightful, glossy, green, serrated leaves. The flowers are white with a slight blush over the bud and resemble snapdragons. The name 'Chelone' translates to the word tortoise, and some think the blooms resemble an open-mouthed turtle head. These blooms attract butterflies and hummingbirds to your garden. Use rich loam soil, and plant in full sun to part sun/ part shade and make sure only the roots are in water, keep foliage out of the water – but roots must stay moist. White Turtlehead is great for bog areas, rain gardens, stream beds and in your pond. May grow to 2-feet height/width. Benefits from lily-type fertilizers and tends to be a late-bloomer.Yerba Mansa, Native (Anemopsis Californica) [Zones 5-9] is a hardy pond plant with unusual flowers. White petals surround a tall cone in the center of the bloom and has a sweet fragrance. Foliage is waxy green. Yerba Mansa is native to SW USA as well as northern parts of Mexico and can be found on riverbanks and wetlands. This perennial, aromatic herb has been found to have antifungal properties and has been used in herbal preparations as a calming agent, for sinus infections and wound care, among other ailments, by Native Americans and Hispanics. Yerba Mansa grows to 12 inches tall in part sun to part shade and has a running spread. Flowers and foliage may be tipped in red-- if hit with a cold snap. Plant this lovely specimen with its roots in moist soil on a streambed or in containers and place in your pond with an inch of water over the pots. Plant Yerba Mansa in full sun to part shade, it prefers wet soil or shallow water, has a running spread and sends out rootstock. When plant sends out rootstock, you can trim off the additional rootstock and discard or pot up additional plants and place in your pond or in containers with moist soil. Fertilize once a month with Waterlily World Fertilizer Tabs + Humates AS AVAILABLECommon Duckweed (Lemna minor) – surface floating hardy and pestiferous invasive weed - is a very tiny leaf aquatic plant that spreads like wildfire all over your garden pond! Yes, ducks do eat it (it contains up to 40% protein)... and so do Tilapia and other aqua-farmed fish or water turtles. I remember watching some EOTW survival show where a family covered their ponds with this... on purpose, to feed their chickens and fish. So can you! Not recommended for small poorly oxygenated ponds though... these little guys can steal all of the sunlight and suck the O2 totally out of the water killing all the fish! I used to throw mine out, sometimes a pound of the stuff or more each week, but if you want mine for fish food… it’s yours for the shipping cost. Duckweed is an ecological disaster in some southern states/counties and sale of it is prohibited by law in many places – know your local laws about this invasive weed!Once per Week Special - you'll get all that I can skim away in a week! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Permanently UNAVAILABLE ~ Plants Illegal in TexasTEXAS DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE RULE §19.300Common NameBotanical NameNoxious plantsAlligator weedAlternanthera philoxeroidesBalloon vineCardiospermum halicacabumBrazilian peppertreeSchinus terebinthifoliusbroomrapeOrobanche ramosacamelthornAlhagi camelorumChinese tallow treeTriadica sebiferaEurasian watermilfoilMyriophyllum spicatumgiant duckweedSpirodela oligorrhizagiant reedArundo donaxhedge bindweedCalystegia sepiumhydrillaHydrilla verticillataitchgrassRottboellia cochinchinensisJapanese dodderCuscuta japonicakudzuPueraria montana var. lobatalagarosiphonLagarosiphon majorpaperbarkMelaleuca quinquenerviapurple loosestrifeLythrum salicariarooted water hyacinthEichhornia azureasaltcedarTamarix spp.salviniaSalvinia spp.serrated tussockNassella trichotomatorpedograssPanicum repenstropical soda appleSolanum viarumwater spinachIpomoea aquaticaWater hyacinthEichhornia crassipesWater lettucePistia stratiotesInvasive plantschinaberryMelia azedarachChinese tallow treeTriadica sebiferaJapanese climbing fernLygodium japonicumkudzuPueraria montana var. lobatasaltcedarTamarix spp.tropical soda appleSolanum viarum ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Recommendations for Frost Resistant PlantsI live in Houston (USDA Zone 9a), and accordingly some water plants find our summer heat of 100+ degrees a bit hard to handle – and other even more tropically inclined plants can’t handle even a minimal winter freeze. Growing plants is always an adventure – an art and certainly not a science! Buyers will need to be aware of their USDA Zone and even with optimal plants for your region there can be considerable trial-and-error to care properly for your plants in all seasons.I often get asked about ‘winter-safe’ pond plants for more northern climates, like Zones 5-7. The below comments are based upon my ‘best educated guess’ – your mileage may vary!General Rules of Thumb - Most Submerged/Floating/Surface/Bog Plants will die after a hard freeze – but most will regrow in the spring from either their roots (if planted in soil pots) or seeds from the prior year. Plants in heavy ceramic pots placed on cement/stone patios may retain a little extra ambient heat in winter, especially if covered during freezes or they can be moved indoors during hard freezes. Alternatively, many buyers in northern zones treat many semi-tropical pond plants as annuals – replacing their plants each spring after the last risk of frost. Some Frost-Tolerant Pond Plants: a listing based solely upon USDA Zone tolerance listings – not practical experience:Anacharis (5a+), Chameleon Plant (4b+), Creeping Jenny (2+), Dwarf Horsetail Rush (3+), Forget-Me-Not (3+), Frogbit (5+), Hornwort (4b+), Marsh Marigold (3+), Parrot’s Feather (6+) & Pickerel Rush (blue 4+)/(white 5+), Variegated Sweet Flag (5+) & Water Purslane (3+) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Your plants will be carefully selected, wrapped in wet newspaper and shipped inside a ziplock bag, mailed in a padded envelope. Orders of two or more plants will normally be mailed in a box. I'll try and mail your plants early in the week on a Monday or Tuesday ONLY!The sale of Water Garden/Pond Plants may be regulated by your state or county!LIVE Pond plants are grown in an organic outdoor environment and may include normal organic pond debrisSome photographs may be stock pictures, not taken by me – I just want the best detailed pictures of the plant varieties available and sometimes my amateur photography sucks! If you are the copyright owner and object to any image used, I will immediately remove them. IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH A PLANT LET ME KNOW! DON'T JUST COMPLAIN IN FEEDBACKLIVE DELIVERY GUARANTEED OR I WILL IMMEDIATELY REPLACE THEM!I strive for 100% plant satisfaction!I started off circa 2008 just collecting obscure, hard-to-find water plants for my own fish and turtle ponds… but as they outgrew my small starter ponds, and occasionally I sold off a few extras on eBay. I added more ponds and plants (especially after we moved) and I’m still experimenting with additional new varieties! As of 2016 – I somehow became the largest water gardening plant seller on eBay with several unique varieties that no other water plant seller on eBay has! It wasn’t my plan (and there were growing pains) but water gardening is still first and foremost my hobby and now only secondly a business. Think of me as your friendly neighbor with extra pond plants looking for a good home! Track Page Views With Auctiva's Counter
