José María Falgas was born on Calle de San Antonio, in the popular neighborhood of Santa Eulalia in the summer of 1929. Falgas always knew of his vocation for painting. From a very young age he was attracted to colored pencils and at only seven years old he made his first drawings. And at the age of ten he began his first compositions, among which, for example, war scenes stand out, in which he already shows great skill. At the end of the war, he entered the Marist school. He is passionate about reading the classics in which he finds exotic landscapes. Shortly after, on a mountain excursion with his schoolmates, he discovers a passion for nature and the landscape, which will accompany him for the rest of his life. Among his teachers, Adolfo Muñoz Alonso occupies an important place in the life of Falgas. The one who was a professor of philosophy, induced, in addition to study, the exercise of tenacity and guided the painter in his first steps. Years later - and after passing through the Marist Brothers - thanks to a scholarship from the Murcia City Council, he would enter the San Fernando School of Fine Arts in Madrid. His journey had only just begun. Years later Rome, Florence, Milan, Paris, London would follow... But that would come later. At just 17 years old and having finished high school, he was faced with the dilemma of choosing a path and found in his parents the support to be a painter, which would take him in 1948 to the San Fernando Superior School of Fine Arts, in Madrid. Throughout the years prior to his stay in Madrid he would come into contact with the Society of Friends of the Country in Murcia. In this artistic society with tradition -in which Salzillo was a teacher- he receives classes from Sánchez Picazo. Likewise, Falgas finds in Luis Garay another painter who encourages and guides the then apprentice. It is at this time that he also reaps the friendship of another of the greats of Murcian painting: Antonio Gómez Cano, a teacher for whom he will maintain a clear predilection with respect to the rest of Murcian painters and who will serve as a reference. Only a few years before, he had begun to experiment with oil and watercolor. All that previous experience would come to fruition at the School of Fine Arts. It would be in the bohemian Madrid of the 50s in which he would spend a few decisive years, in contact with life, adding enriching experiences that soon after would bear fruit in his work. It would also be there where he would hold his first exhibition and where he would have his first teachers, such as Vázquez Díaz, Stolz or Martínez Vázquez. His landing in a Madrid pension on El Carmen street could not have been better. From the first moment he began to sell paintings, which allows him to live by his own means. It is in that happy Madrid that Falgas lives intensely, although under the austerity that characterizes his person. My memories of the San Fernando Academy always end with the same reflection. I did not know how to integrate into that environment. He frequently missed class. I was distracted in that claim of the big city with endless nights. That education received at the College had failed in the first shock with life. I missed a course due to lack of attendance and as a consequence I lost my scholarship. But I was lucky to find the understanding of Don Julio Moisés, director of the San Fernando Academy, and the good disposition of the Murcia City Council, which renewed my scholarship. (...) I accepted the lesson and reformed my behavior (...). Starting in the 1950s, Falgas is already in an advanced stage of his learning experience, living the life of an artist that he had chosen at just 17 years of age, the result of a clear vocation that will accompany him for the rest of his artistic career. Far away is that shy boy. He becomes fully aware of his freedom and of a path he wants to walk . He then begins his journey through the lands of Spain. Some time later Falgas-a painter already trained, with experience and a richer sensibility- returns to Madrid, although for a short time, since his next vital destination will be Italy, followed by London, where he paints watercolors and studies the teachers of him. He will return to Yecla and from there to what will be his refuge in El Escorial and where he will spend one of the most challenging stages of his professional career. But his style with the passing of the years does not fit and although very defined he keeps changing. Thus, for example, he fragments a landscape on fire until turning it into rocky and blue spots, with thick textures such as he had not used up to now, with almost informalist suggestions. A life of constant work framed in a clear vocation as an artist and, specifically, as a painter. His landscapes would be enriched with new settings, not only with corners of Murcia, but of many of the European capitals, which would also lead him to different exhibitions in Paris, Lisbon, etc... In 1994 Falgas received a distinction from the Paris Academy of Arts, which was one of the greatest satisfactions in his artistic career. Two years later, he would arrive in Murcia with a retrospective of his painting at the Almudí Palace , an exhibition that collected his vision of the world and showed absolute fidelity in the evolution of his painting. In parallel, another sample of his was presented in Tripoli. Her professional success was recognized both in her land and abroad. Meanwhile, his evolution was more and more evident, the result of maturity, but also a consequence of sensitivity and the greater or lesser wealth of the environment . Falgas is not a studio painter and fixed easel, but a restless, adventurous painter, tireless traveler . Paris, Libya, Russia, Egypt, Morocco... And, especially, the desert, a landscape that is a vocation, an irresistible call. Thus, the last years of the career of this Murcian painter have passed between different landscapes , landscapes of silence -as he affirms-, and encounters with the infinite. Because, as stated in one of his poems, he is an heir to Mediterranean culture. Man of the South, son of the sun... of the philosophy of living in the light . But his Saharan adventure is not the last. The search for other horizons enriches a lengthy work with which Falgas still has a lot to say. Free eBay listing template designed by © dewiso.com.
