Garden City, NY: Doubleday, 1968. 1st edition. With “First Edition” printed on the copyright page which indicates that this is the correct 1st edition, 1st printing. This is NOT a book club book. This is NOT an ex-library book. Buyer beware: STAND ON ZANZIBAR was reprinted in several later book club editions that look similar to the 1st edition. This is the real deal: the true 1st edition, 1st printing. SCROLL DOWN THIS PAGE IMMEDIATELY TO SEE THE CONDITION OF THIS BOOK AND THIS DUST JACKET. John Brunner was born in 1934 in Preston Crowmarsh, near Wallingford in Oxfordshire and he died in 1995 in Glasgow. He attended St. Andrew’s Prep School, Pangbourne and Cheltenham College. He served as an officer in the Royal Air Force from 1953 to 1955. He married Marjorie Rosamond Sauer in 1958. His health began to decline in the 1980’s and then worsened with the death of his wife in 1986. He remarried, to Li Yi Tan, in 1991. He wrote his first novel, GALACTIC STORM, at age 17, and published it under the pseudonym Gill Hunt. Early on Brunner wrote conventional space opera, but then he began to experiment with the novel form. His 1968 novel STAND ON ZANZIBAR exploits the fragmented organizational style that John Dos Passos invented for his USA Trilogy. Brunner’s novels STAND ON ZANZIBAR (concerning the overpopulation of Earth [among other things]; offered here), THE JAGGED ORBIT (concerning a United States dominated weapons proliferation and interracial violence), THE SHEEP LOOK UP (concerning ecological catastrophe in America), and THE SHOCKWAVE RIDER (concerning the emergence of computer viruses [Brunner is credited with coining the term “worm,” referring to a computer virus] across a vast computer network). The above novels have called the “Club of Rome Quartet,” named after the Club of Rome whose 1972 report THE LIMITS OF GROWTH, warned of the dire effects overpopulation. John Brunner was the author of such great and famous books as GALACTIC STORM (as Gill Hunt), THRESHOLD OF ETERNITY, ECHO IN THE SKULL, THE WORLD SWAPPERS, THE BRINK, SANCTUARY IN THE SKY, I SPEAK FOR EARTH, THE SUPER BARBARIANS, THE LADDER IN THE SKY, THE ASTRONAUTS MUST NOT LAND, THE RITES OF ONE, THE WHOLE MAN (British title: TELEPATHIST), THE MARTIAN SPHINX, THE LONG RESULT, THE SQUARE OF THE CITY, A PLANET OF YOUR OWN, QUICKSAND, STAND ON ZANZIBAR (offered here), THE JAGGED ORBIT, TIMESCOOP, THE WRONG END OF TIME, THE SHEEP LOOK UP, TOTAL ECLIPSE, THE SHOCKWAVE RIDER, PLAYERS AT THE GAME OF PEOPLE, THE CRUCIBLE OF TIME, A MAZE OF STARS, NO FUTURE IN IT, NO OTHER GODS BUT ME, OUT OF MY MIND, THE TRAVELER IN BLACK, FOREIGN CONSTELLATIONS, and many others. Clearly John Brunner was (and remains) one of the best, most famous, most important, and most collectible science fiction authors of all time. From the dust jacket: “ . . . JOHN BRUNNER . . . STAND ON ZANZIBAR . . . This is a giant of a book . . . Not just in size, either although probably it is the longest novel of its kind ever published. That’s incidental. It had to be big to give elbow-room for its subject matter: the portrayal of an entire future world . . . Seven billion-plus of our species, crowding the face of twenty-first century Earth in an age of acceleratubes and Moonbase Zero, intelligent computers and mass-marketed psychedelics, are still going to be human. Employing a dazzling range of literary techniques, John Brunner has created a future world as vivid as this morning’s newspaper, detail after telling detail sockets three-dimensionality into place, creating . . . o A New York City where you dare not venture after dark unless you’re prepared to risk triggering a riot. o Yatakang, an island country of Asia where scientists burn incense to the spirit of a threatening volcano. o Beninia, where African heat and oppressive damp plague men struggling to solve a mystery that might save Man from himself. Across this brilliant world-spanning panorama we follow the fate of three key men: Norman House, Negro vice-president of a billion-dollar corporation who gets exactly what he’s always wanted, and finds that it’s turned to ashes in his mouth; Chad Mulligan, the sociologist who tried and failed to opt out of the society he so deeply detested; and Donald Hogan, who is made into a machine designed to kill . . . But these are only the brightest stars in a whole galaxy of characters. Sometimes caustic, sometimes cynical, always compassionate, Brunner probes the private agonies of scores of victims of the forces which drive the protagonists, deftly illuminating their thinking and emotions by subtle implication: Frank and Sheena Potter, forbidden to bear children because they would inherit the banned gene for dichromatism; Elihu Masters, compelled by love to sell his best friend into slavery; Guinevere Steel, fashion-dictator of the Western world; Professor Dr. Sugaiguntung, in whose quiet laboratory the seed is planted for a world-wide crisis; and -- perhaps most remarkable of all -- Shalmaneser, the computer that must be called not ‘it’ but ‘he,’ because he knows more than his makers . . . STAND ON ZANZIBAR is exciting, and funny, and sad, and moving, and provocative, and real, and fantastic, and honest, and imaginative, and horrifying -- in short, it’s like the world we live in . . . “ From the rear flap of the dust jacket: “ . . . John Brunner was born in Oxfordshire, England, in 1934. Since 1951 when he sold his first novel, he has published more than forty books and over a hundred short stories. He received the British fantasy Award in 1966 for his contributions to speculative fiction. He is also held in considerable regard as a poet and topical songwriter . . . Mr. Brunner, who is married lives in Hampstead, London, but travels widely and in recent years has been a frequent visitor to the United States . . . “ From the rear panel of the dust jacket: “ . . . There’s a belief still current among British schoolchildren that you could stand the entire human race on the 147-square-mile Isle of Wight, elbow to elbow and face to face . . . Well, that may have been true around the time of World War I although nobody was keeping records accurate enough for us to be certain. However, right now in the 1960’s you’d have a tough job packing us on the 221-square-mile Isle of Man . . . And by 2010 -- the time this book takes place, you’d need an altogether larger island -- something like the 640-square-mile surface of Zanzibar! . . . “ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I grade books and dust jackets: fine, near fine, very good, good, fair, and poor. I describe all faults. If you sell books on EBAY (or anywhere else), it is de rigueur not to list 1st printings of book club books as 1st editions (unless they ARE the 1st edition, which occurs only occasionally); also, a 1st edition, 7th printing, is not a 1st edition. Ex-library books must be noted as such since generally they are of little value to the collector of 1st editions. Condition is also very important to those collectors. Books and dust jackets must be described in detail. In other words, it is incumbent upon the SELLER to know what is and is not a 1st edition. Mistakes can be made (and corrected), of course, but if you DON'T KNOW, don't try to sell a book as a 1st edition. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ CONDITION: A NEAR FINE (or better) book in an outwardly VERY GOOD dust jacket. The book is tight and square in its black full-cloth binding with bright silver lettering and pink vertical bars on the spine of the book; an unusual book in that this Doubleday 1st edition from the 1960’s is in a full-cloth binding. The book has the required and famous (infamous?) bright pink endpapers. The endpapers are not cracked near the gutter; this book often shows up with a crack or cracks near the gutters of the endpapers, but not in this case. There is no writing in the book; no bookplates; no remainder marks. The dust jacket is NOT price-clipped and shows the correct 1st issue price of $6.95. There are no chips or tears or wrinkles to the dust jacket. The dust jacket has undergone some archival (non-acidic) reinforcement, mainly at the head and heel of the spine panel. There is also some minor color touch-up at the head and heel of the spine panel; largely unobtrusive. There is a smudge at the lower portion of the spine panel of the dust jacket that mainly affects the “C” in “FICTION.” The largely black dust jacket shows some of the usual rubbing, but less than is usually encountered. The famous and fantastic dust jacket design is by S. A. Summit. Nice copies of STAND ON ZANZIBAR are difficult to come by because of the large size of the book, because of the pink endpapers, and because the black dust jacket shows rubbing quite easily; this is the nicer copies of STAND OF ZANZIBAR that I’ve seen in the last few years. I use the EBAY shipping system to send out the majority of the books that I sell. Insurance is included in the shipping charges for this book that the buyer will be paying. One would assume that the buyer would want to insure this book for its correct value. A MUST FOR THE COLLECTOR OF IMPORTANT 1960’s SCIENCE FICTION 1st EDITIONS AND/OR THE COLLECTOR OF HUGO AWARD WINNING 1st EDITIONS AND/OR THE COLLECTOR OF JOHN BRUNNER 1st EDITIONS! ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Additional photos are available upon request. I am continuing to list some of my best books (especially science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions) on EBAY not so much as auctions (due to the fact that EBAY charges quite a bit to list items for reserve auctions), but more along the lines of listing my “catalogue” of books that I have for sale. I'm not going to “give” these books away, but my opening bids and Buy-It-Now prices are usually a fair amount below market value. Furthermore, however, for certain scarce books in great condition, I do expect to get close to what they're worth. Stay with me; I always have a number of important, collectible, cornerstone science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions listed. Many thanks! All items are being offered for sale elsewhere; I reserve the right to end this listing early if this item sells elsewhere. __________________________________________________________________________________ Note: I own the following two books: Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY JUSTICE. Subterranean Press, 2014. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY MERCY. Subterranean Press, 2016. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). I am looking for: Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY SWORD. Subterranean Press, 2015. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). I would like to round out this set by acquiring the #2/500 copy of ANCILLARY SWORD. If anyone has this copy and is willing to sell it on EBAY, I would be highly interested in obtaining it so that all my copies would have matching numbers. Many thanks. __________________________________________________________________________________ Contact me if you’re looking for a particular title or titles. I have thousands of books for sale that may or may not show up in my EBAY listings. I am happy to set up flexible PAYMENT and/or HOLD PLANS for any book(s) that you bid on and win. Shipping: $4.00 for USPS Media Mail shipping. $10.00 for USPS Priority Mail shipping. I always combine shipping charges if you obtain two or more items from me. Buyers who wish to have packages sent to addresses outside of the U.S. are required to pay for the postage necessary to send such packages. Please note: if you want something other than USPS Media Mail shipping, you must wait for me to send you an EBAY invoice or if you are a buyer outside of the United States, you must wait for me to send you an EBAY invoice. You must be willing to pay for non-USPS Media Mail shipping charges or for international shipping charges. I reserve the right to negate a purchase if you are unwilling to pay for the correct shipping charges either to an address in the U.S. or if international shipping is required. I am happy to set up flexible payment and layaway plans if these options make it easier for you to participate in bidding and winning. Please e-mail me if you have any questions. See my other auctions on EBAY for excellent science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions (and a few other items). I specialize in science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions: award winners, cornerstone books, and generally recognized important books in the genre(s). I GUARANTEE THE CONDITION OF THIS BOOK; IF YOU DON’T LIKE IT, SEND IT BACK! If you prefer payment methods other than PayPal (as I do), I am happy to arrange for a different payment method for you. Before you buy from others, check out their return policies and their guarantees and compare them to mine. I stand behind all of my items FULLY. Why deal with a seller who won't guarantee their books, doesn't have a return policy, or doesn’t correctly describe the edition or condition of their book(s)?
