He studied at the Pedagogical Academy in Alkmaar and at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. As an art student, he got to know Berlin. In 1971 he moved permanently there. Exciting, thrilling, this city has always been the connection to the Berlin art scene both in the West and the East was easy for him. In the European Academy in Grunewald then head Detlef Gosselck hosted the first Louis exhibition. There he discovered the founder and director of the Museum Haus am Checkpoint Charlie, Dr. Rainer Hildebrandt and bought several paintings for the museum. The pictures of Louis are at first glance, almost photo-realistic depictions of nature. This puts them in even one of the trends of the contemporary art scene. But Louis is not a trend-painter. He works in his realistic landscape images often with more or less small, man-made artefacts. These are sometimes only on second glance to be discovered evidence, like a can of Coke on the beach, a Pylon in the midst of a green paradise. There are almost wistful characters of transience, fragility of the human-created, which are easily modeled by the viewer. Water, stones, people are central to his work. The meditative silence of its almost monochromatic green / blue images - softly broken by tiny red or yellow color splashes - shows the sovereign serenity of nature. The old bristle brush conjures rhythmic tracks by grasses and meadows. The sensitive color traces of the calculated splashes can be seen only at close range. Thus, the apparent photo realism dissolves, the "idyll" is an artistic reality. This is certainly one of his success secrets. Louis shows us with highly refined means of his artistic techniques, the graceful nature as powerful, irresistible force which takes all of human created things. His pictures are little philosophical essays. Louis "the Flying Dutchman" travels the world: Argentina, Chile, Peru, Lebanon, Italy, USA, Spain, France, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Portugal, Switzerland, Austria, England, Panama, Mexico, Guatemala, Japan , Hong Kong, Thailand, Canada, Hungary, Greece, Luxembourg, Morocco, China, Namibia, Bolivia, Czechoslovakia, Tunisia, El Salvador, South Africa. Louis brings all the experience in a nutshell: the nature is beautiful and their power is undiminished. The subtle humor and mischief of this artist not only in his paintings but also in his writings published since 1973 to discover and enjoy.
