The NOTE affixed to the first free endpage concerns the book of stories, On the Makaloa Mat which London's widow offers here to a Mrs. Jones in Hawaii as testament to the fact "there was no weakening of Jack London's mental power" at the end of his life. She refers to one story in this collection, "The Water Baby," as "the last short story he ever wrote." The note is dated May 16, 1920, and she signs off "Aloha nui loa! Charmian London. " The PHOTO affixed just above the note is said to be Jack London's favorite photo of himself. The photo is sepia-toned with sharp edges, and in Very Good Plus condition. Additionally, there is Jack London bookplate with the author's name and depiction of a wolf on the front pastedown endpage. FINE (Pristine) hardcover in original greenish blue pictorial cloth binding with yellow lettering and seascape and volcano in blue and yellow, with no issues. Clean and tight with sharp tips and ends, and no markings. Sound and sturdy, with a firm binding. Very clean interior. Text block is clean, pages are free of fingerprints and signs of previous use.
