Description: This maker's violins and cellos rarely come up for auction but when they do they sell because his work is in demand by collectors and musicians alike. B.1727, d.1807, BolognaThe auction record for this maker is $54,595 in Nov 1997, for a violin. According to Dimitri Gindin, today Marchi violins sell for between 100K to 160K USD (depending on condition) in prestigious violin shops in Chicago, NYC, Boston, and London. I am having the violin appraised and will put the appraisal up along with the condition report shortly. I am willing to sell at a slightly lower price if the violin is bought through my luthier in Vermont or my dealer's violin shop in London. The fair market appraisal value for this violin is US$77,000. You will receive the John Dilworth (London, UK) appraisal and certificate of authenticity (see photo) as well as the dendro report. A pupil of J.F. Guidantus, his instruments are comparatively rare, but are well-made and varnished with a clear, hard yellow or golden-brown, similar to that of Guidantus. He is best known for his treatise on violin making published in 1786, one of the earliest first-hand texts on the subject. The violin is in a good state of preservation and has been repaired/restored by James Banicki Violin (Vermont). It needed only a good cleaning, new fingerboard, and some minor repairs and adjustments. You may call him from his Facebook page (phone) for details on what was done. (Jim is one of the finest luthiers in the U.S. that has worked on Strads and Guarneri violins. The violin will come with a dendro report, the sound file, fair market appraisal done by John Dilworth, and certificate of authenticity by John Dilworth (London). The dates given on the dendro report are 1757 and 1758 treble and bass sides respectively for the dendro. The violin was likely made around 1780. The varnish is in very good condition and the color is golden brown. The LOB (length of back) is 350 mm. The violin is easy to play and very responsive. The tonal quality is that of an early Strad. This violin is a keeper for a lifetime of playing. It's a fine instrument that will provide much satisfaction to the user! The timbre is rich, sweet, velvety smooth, with some grit at the bottom—a nice 18th century Italian tonal quality as you would expect. This violin would be an excellent choice for a professional orchestral player, chamber violinist, or a Julliard or Curtis student seeking to become a professional. Moreover, it is very much an affordable Italian violin. In a brick & mortar store, you would pay much more. 2-week trial period. The violin is currently on consignment in London, UK. It can be made available for viewing in London or in Vermont (USA). It's an excellent violin and it is affordable. Let me know your comments or questions.
