His outlook was similar to that of A.B. Frost, and like Frost, he illustrated many of the Uncle Remus stories by Joel Chandler Harris. Kemble illustrated several other famous books, including Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn, and Puddin' Head Wilson, Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin, and Washington Irving's Knickerbocker History of New York. His humor made him an effective political cartoonist as well. He had special rapport with African-American characters, and drew them alternatively with great empathy or with the most outrageous of stereotypes.
