Description: HARRY CLAYTON ADAMS(1876-1956) ST IVES BAY, CORNWALL Priced very much to sell, this is a splendid, wonderfully atmospheric, turn of the century/very early 20th century (probably Edwardian) antique oil on (wooden) panel of the premium location that is this beautiful and highly desirable view of St Ives Bay, Cornwall! As painted by Harry Clayton Adams who moved to Cornwall, and was inspired by Cornwall, and is now best known for just such Cornish work. And who is now widely regarded as a Cornish artist, even though he wasn't born there. Obviously painted en plein air (out in the open, in situ), this has the lovely atmospheric immediacy that only comes with that. It's very painterly, with some nice thick impasto and rich colours in the sky helping to impart a lovely quality of light! And it pulls the viewer into the artist's personal experience re what he was seeing and feeling on that day, as he was sitting looking at that amazing view all those years ago. With this being a relatively early work, not far off the turn of the century, c1905, I think. So it's about 120 years old now, but is in great condition! Oil on panel (wood) measuring about 16 1/4 x 20 1/4 inches(41.5 x 51.5 cm)And including the frame, the whole measures about 21 1/4 x 25 1/4 inches.(about 54 x 64 cm)Signed "H Clayton Adams" to lower right. There is a remnant of a label verso with very faded/indistinct writing even where it's survived. But when one knows what it will likely have said, one can still make sense of it. It would have had the title to the top, followed by the artist's name and his address. And one can just about see that the title starts with "ST" is followed by "ES" and that there's a "B" near the end. So St Ives Bay was correctly interpreted from that. The artist's name is missing (the painting is signed anyway) apart from the final "ams" of "Adams". And his address, which one can see bits of was "The Towans", Hayle, Cornwall. There's also a Royal Academy label verso, which could mean that this has actually been Royal Academy exhibited, which would be very significant indeed if true! I'm knowingly selling this much cheaper than it should/would be in a more conducive selling environment than Ebay, but even on Ebay the price would be 4/5 times higher if RA exhibited. But I have checked the online RA exhibitors facility, and I couldn't find it. That facility is still incomplete, though, and there are quite a few errors, so that I didn't see it is not necessarily definitive. One of the things that is potentially confusing the issue is that there was another Harry Adams, who's not Harry Clayton Adams, but the name is similar enough to mess with the system. There are also two other paper label remnants re labels that are otherwise entirely missing. And 4 labels on the back does strongly suggests that it's been exhibited somewhere, even if not at the RA. If I do ascertain where that was, then the price will be going up. Harry Clayton Adams was the son of the landscape artist John Clayton Adams (1840-1906), and was born in 1876 at the family home that his father actually had built, "Brackenhurst, Pitch Hill, Cranleigh, near Guildford, Surrey. Now predominantly known as a Cornish artist. With this being in excellent condition and good to hang as it is in its original frame, albeit that a little scuffed. It still has its original varnish too, which at well over 100 years old, is now a little brown, imparting a slightly yellower tone overall than it originally had. I haven't cleaned it, because some people do prefer untouched condition, and because that takes quite a lot of time. But it could be cleaned. The thing to do would be to come and chat about it.
