Hans Peder Aaland ( 1890-1962) Listed in Slygbom and Munksgaards encyclopedia. Born in Copenhagen 1890. Member of the artists union of 1927. Aaland debuted at the artists fall exhibition in 1908 at the age of 28. He later traveled to Paris around 1912 where he lived and worked in Montparnasse until 1914. Aaland shared a studio with fellow Danish modernist Niels Erik Lange. And attended classes at the ecole des beaux art. They both returned to Copenhagen around autumn in 1914. On August 3, 1914. Germany had declared war on France and the opening of World War One, made it dangerous and also financially impossible for the two of them to remain in Paris. During the 1920ties and 30ties, Aaland traveled around in Germany where he worked in Berlin and Munich from 1927. Dusseldorf from 1929. and Frankfurt from 1931. Aaland marriage to a Jewish nurse made his journeys in Germany more and more difficult. Around 1932, a German officer had insulted his wife and Aaland was in prison for a month for hitting the officer. Aaland and his wife returned to Denmark shortly after he came out of prison. They both joined the resistance in Copenhagen. After the war, Aaland returned to Paris where he died around 1962. The works of H.P Aaland were highly inspired by his many travels in France and Germany. H.P Aaland continued to experiment throughout his carrier and worked with many movements like the French inspired cubism, German Expressionism and Scandinavian modernism.
