Description: This was one of the first things I purchased when I joined eBay in 1998. I had seen one in a display of vintage time pieces at a local jewelry store. I thought it was one of the neatest watches I had ever seen, and decided I had to have one. It has been in my display case ever since. This is a World War II era deck watch that was used as a ship’s chronometer on smaller vessels, and as a companion to the larger chronometers found on bigger ships. It was developed by Hamilton during the war, especially for the Navy. During World War II, the ships chronometers would stay safely below deck, and the deck watches could be taken top side or to the bridge for navigation. Chronometers were used in celestial navigation. You were able to get an accurate fix on your ship’s longitude position so you didn’t get lost. Which I am assuming during World War II, would hamper your chances of ever becoming an admiral, or reaching your next birthday. This watch is in excellent condition. It comes with both of the wood cases, which are also in excellent condition. The smaller case has a couple dings and some light scratches on the bottom. But hey, it went through World War II. It is a 21-jewel movement. I wound it and timed it against my Apple Watch for 24 hours and it only gained 10 seconds. I had it serviced not long after I bought it, but that’s been a long time ago so if you plan on using it on a regular basis, I would definitely have it serviced again. The watch is in beautiful condition and the back is engraved BUREAU OF SHIPS, U.S. NAVY, 3069-1942, CHRONOMETER WATCH. I don’t know what else to add except if you’re looking for a really neat time piece and a great historical artifact from World War II. This is it. Please look at all the photos for condition. If you have any questions let me know. Item will be securely packed and shipped USPS Ground Advantage. Buyer to pay actual postage based on their location. I will try to ship in 3 days or less. Thanks for looking!
