PLATE IMPRESSION: 8.5" x 11.25" The metallic gold painted, wood frame includes glass. The protective paper on the back of this frame was (as found) damaged and is now removed. (Please see photos.) FRAME: 11.75" x 14.75" Honoré Daumier (1808 – 1879) was a French painter, sculptor and printmaker best known for his caricatures critiquing and satirizing society and politics in 19th-century France. He was a working class liberal, earning a living and notoriety by producing work which satirized and lampooned the monarchy, politicians, the judiciary, lawyers, the bourgeoisie, as well as his countrymen and human nature in general. During the rule of Louis Phillipe, he was imprisoned for his infamous depiction of the king as Gargantua (the gluttonous giant in François Rabelais’ novel) in the magazine La Caricature. Charles Baudelaire once said of Daumier that he was, “one of the most important men, I will not say only of caricature, but also of Modern Art.” Daumier's work has had a lasting impact on the art world as an important forerunner of Impressionism, and he is often praised for the technical skill and artistic vision of his work. In this lifetime, Daumier produced over 500 paintings, 4000 lithographs, 1000 wood engravings, 1000 drawings and 100 sculptures. His work can be seen in many important museums around the world, including the Louvre Museum in Paris, The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, the National Gallery in London, and the Neue Pinakothek in Munich, among others.
