The Summer '71 " Houseboat Tapes " !!! ... which were nowhere to be found for close to 35-Years ! ... living on Keith Godchaux's Parents Houseboat -- and " Returned " to the Vault by Donna Jean Godchaux !!!!! Wow !?!!((( *** Please Note : This 4-CD Set is the Original ! 2005 Grateful Dead Productions, Inc. First ( 1st ! ) Pressing ( DECD289 ) - Not the Real Gone Re-Issue / Re-Printing ! *** ))) Dead Fans !!! Talk about a G.D. Treasure from yesteryear ? It doesn't get much more exciting than this for our ears - when comes to those " What are the Chances ? " situations. I mean Wow !?! Do you know the story on this monumental release ? I hope you do ... but if not - here's the skinny .. .. .. So, right after Keith & Donna Godchaux joined the band - in '71, Garcia went into the Vault - or, someone went in there for him ... and grabbed these Master Soundboard Reel-To-Reels from the Summer '71 ( August ) period ... and gave them to Keith. Why ? Well, to listen & learn how to blend into the Grateful Dead - as the newest band member ... pure G.D. style, right ? A pure crash-course on learning how to apply the Keys in various ways for the material that was fresh, and in the current live rotation. So Keith accepted, took all of those offered - and started listening & learning away. Well, that was in late '71 .... so here we were close to 35-years later, and there is no sign or trace of a fairly-large chunk of this era ( August '71 ) in the Vault - and no one on the inside has really any clue about the whereabouts ? So ... in 2005 --- ( now, check this out !!?! ) ...... Donna calls up the G.D. Office ( as the story goes ... ), and says that there were a bunch of G.D. marked Reel-To-Reels that were found on Keith's parents Houseboat !!! So in no time ... these things were All ! back to their rightful place in the Vault, and were carefully inspected - listened to, checked-out, I mean you name it ! To date, this was an unmatched " Return " of quintessential G.D. Live Shows to the Vault .. .. .. and Thankfully !! for the Dead Fan Faithful, hence this release. This one is a dandy, not only performance & energy wise, but the story surrounding it really can't be topped. Three Cheers for Donna-Jean ! And Keith's folks too, for not ' discarding ' his toys after decade passes decade - like many parents likely would ! Beyond a treasure - really ... As on this 4-CD Set, you are treated to the entire 8/7/71 San Diego, CA Show at Golden Hall. In addition, you also receive a good portion of the 8/24/71 Show from Chicago, IL at the Auditorium Theatre. And last, but definitely ! no least ... you are also the ( very proud ! ) recipient of a nice-chunk ( Bonus Tracks ) from the Monumental !!! 8/6/71 Show at the Hollywood Palladium in Hollywood, CA. So Yeah ?!! As it truly goes without saying ... this 4-CD Set here ( in the form of DP #35 ! ) is a Must-Have release ! This is rough & ready Powerhouse '71 G.D., and these performances selected, as I understand - were truly the best of the best available in this " Find ". The sound is truly Amazing, with true consideration of the conditions that these tapes were living - I mean you can't even tell, with this pristine digital remastering ! Big credit to Keith's Parents ... as really, both them & Donna are the reason this happened for all of us.
