Description: Gilsonite is a naturally occurring asphaltite found in Colorado and Utah, one of the purest bitumens found. Formed during the Eocene Epoch 45 million years ago in vertical veins, formed from the solidification of petroleum. Found in the Uinta formation in the Uinta basin. This material is mined and milled in Bonanza, Utah. Gilsonite is distinguished by it's solubility in organic solvents, low density and the brown streak when rubbed on paper. This Gilsonite variety is relatively rare and the large size of the Utah deposits make them unique. The elemental analysis of this batch is approximately - 85-86% carbon, 8.5% hydrogen, 2.25-3.29% nitrogen, 1.50% oxygen, .22-.53 sulfur, .3-.7% ash and trace elements. Elemental analysis vary, dependent on the vein. Softening point is 320-360 degrees F. Density is 1.05. BTU's per pound - 16,000 - 18,000. Said to be the first solid hydrocarbon to be converted to gasoline. Uses include - waterproof coatings, black varnishes, lacquers, fuel in exothermic reactions, dry toners, baking enamels, printing inks, automotive undercoatings, furniture stains, clay pigeon binder, etching compounds, wire-insulating compounds, linoleum and floor tiles, paving, insulation, and a possible source of gasoline. Gilsonite was used as the black pigment, in the paint used on the Ford Model T. Packaged in a PP tub, with lid. Material obtained at mine site.
