Description: FRANKENSTEIN'S CREATURE - IT'S STILL WITH US AFTER 200 YEARS LONG BEFORE ANYONE EVER THOUGHT OF DNA OR CLONING or any of the other high tech things that go into the creation of life, English author Mary Shelley conceived a brilliant idea - a scary novel about a human-type figure brought to life in an experiment carried out by a scientist. She started writing it when she was just 18 and it came out in 1818 when she was 20. The first edition was published anonymously and readers were informed it was by "A Lady." It was a shuddering success - so to speak - and it went to further editions in which the author admitted that she was Mary Shelley. The novel was of course Frankenstein and it is one of the most famous books that have come to us from the literary-rich 19th Century. Contrary to what many people think, the monster or "creature" was not named Frankenstein; that was the name of the scientist - Victor Frankenstein - who got himself and others into an awful lot of trouble when his creation got out of control. At one point, the creature - a somewhat ugly fellow - advises Frankenstein: "You are my creator, but I am your master - obey." Hmm - rather like being addressed cheekily by the PC on your writing desk. THE AUTHOR'S FULL NAME WAS MARY WOLLSTONECROFT SHELLY and she was a political radical and feminist ahead of her time. She was also married to the Romantic poet and thinker Percy Bysshe Shelley and both her parents were political philosophers. In 1822 she was beset by a family tragedy when her husband drowned when his sailboat sank during a storm in the Mediterranean. Thereafter, Mary devoted her life to raising her son and to her writing - which was prolific. Her health was poor in the last years of her life and she died at the relatively early age of 53. Mary wrote several novels, travel books and biographical studies, and she also spent a great deal of her energy promoting the works of her husband. But she is remembered mostly for Frankenstein which is now part of Western culture with the name sometimes applied to something which is out of control or doing things that are not intended. The story has been adapted many times for films, television and the theater - even musicals. MANY EDITIONS OF THIS NOVEL HAVE BEEN PUBLISHED at all levels of quality since it first appeared in 1818 - from expensive leather-bound collectibles to inexpensive paperbacks. It has never lost its popularity. The handsome collectible edition we offer here is in the affordable middle price range. It has a soft cover - but it is far from being your usual paperback.
