Description: Description: This is a truly first-class blue and white porcelain vase crafted by one of the most respected Seto-ware potter KATO Zenji III in Meiji period (late 19th century) in Japan. In late 19th century, he produced the highest quality blue and white porcelain products with mesmerizing miniature painting. He won honorable awards at many exhibitions such as the first National Industrial Exhibition held in Tokyo in 1877 (Meiji 10th). In early Meiji, the first-class artifacts made by the topnotch artists (e.g., pottery, lacquerware, metalware) were exhibited at National Industrial Exhibition. He signed at the bottom of the vase as “大日本瀬戸 加藤善治郎 製” (photo #10), which means “Made by KATO Zenjiro from Seto of Great Japan”. Note: He often used Zenjiro (善治郎) instead of Zenji (善治 ) to distinguish himself (Zenji III) from his father (Zenji II), as they had the same name Zenji(善治 ). The white glassy glaze and the vibrant hue of the blue color seen on the vase is exceptionally attractive. And as you can find from the enclosed pictures, his miniature painting is incredibly fine (thinner than hair), precise and mesmerizing. I believe he learned these techniques from KATO Gosuke (the most respected Mino ware potter in Meiji period). In fact, they spend a few years in a same small village called Ichinokura (a part of Mino). The scene (or theme) of this work is "Flowers in Fall". Many quintessential flowers are depicted around the body. The vase is also decorated with unique patterns at the top edge, middle, and the bottom part (photo #12). Very creative. You will be amazed with Zenji's extraordinarily high quality of work. Condition: The vase is restored by a processional Kintsugi artist using white gold. Kintsugi was applied to three points at the upper edge (photo # 8) and one part at the bottom (photo #9). Besides the Kintsugi, the following are observed, and yet these are rather evidences that this vase was made in early Meiji. Because they could often happen at that period while everything was done manually. - The vase is slightly leaned. - Extra glaze attached in the kiln at the two locations, which have been removed (9 o'clock on photo #8 (upper) / 12 o'clock on photo #8 (Lower)). Photo #11: The vase is stored in the highest quality paulownia wooden box, which is believed best to keep precious antiques for long time. It is brand new, custom-made for this particular plate.
