Description: FIRST APPEARANCE of MARK TWAIN's short story, "A Curious Experience" For sale is a scarce, vintage, original printing of Twain's perplexing story titled "A Curious Experience," which first appeared in the November 1881 issue of Century Magazine. As Twain scholar John H. Davis wrote in his Mark Twain's Arousal of Curiosity in 'A Curious Experience,' "The story is deliberately deceptive. It is, in fact, partly about deception, largely about ways in which people deceive themselves and, often unintentionally, through that self-deception, deceive others, who in turn fool themselves and still others. Twain’s first appearance in Century,** “A Curious Experience” concerns the use and abuse of imagination as it contrasts excessive and barren imaginative faculties and demonstrates the ways that both can be misled. While doing so, this story...about storytelling subtly hoaxes both its characters and reader." **Note: this story was also the first appearance of Mark Twain's work in Century Magazine. He had previously published in Scribner's Monthly, which closed in 1881 and was relaunched the same year as the Century Magazine. This 12-page story has been carefully preserved from an original disbound November 1881 issue of Century, where it appeared on pp. 35-46. Very Good+ condition (see pics).
