NOTES Eric Carle was born June 25, 1929 in Syracuse, NY. At the age of 6 Carle's parents brought him back to their native Germany. At the onset of the Second World War, Carle's father was drafted into the military, Carle himself was conscripted at 15, forced to dig trenches. His wartime experiences left Carle with PTSD, something which followed him throughout his life. Carle would return to the United States in 1952 with nearly nothing to his name, and began a career as a graphic designer for the New York Times. This career led Carle to the works he would become most known for, his children's books and their unique collage art style. Carle believed greatly in his books being a bridge between home and school, home being a place of warmth and comfort, school a place of deep unknown and uncertainty. To that end, his art style is very colorful and bright, evoking the comfort of home while teaching new ideas to the reader.
