The selection process is guided not only by aesthetic or artistic considerations, but also by questions of durability, scale, and compatibility of the sculpture with the landscape. Storm King is not only a museum. It is a park as well, a beautiful landscape, critical in making it the "king of sculpture parks.' Much the same can be said about the Storm King Art Center. It was not planned, it was created. In 1960, none of the major sculptures that are the glory of Storm King yet existed. Sculptors were only beginning to make large-scale, abstract works. The property was one-third its present size. The planting of alleys of trees and the massive creation of hills and wide, sculpted walking areas through fields of long grasses and wildflowers were not yet dreamed of. Over the years, area by area, we sculpted the landscape. Into this land-scape we "planted" sculptures, as if they were specimen many angles where they would be seen to advantage from and far.
