The author's own recording (for Caedmon Records in 1952), frequently credited as the beginning of the modern audiobook industry, was largely responsible for the piece's extraordinary and enduring popularity - and its eventual publication in this form - though its inclusion on the LP was a happy accident: at the recording studio, short of material to fill both sides of the record, Thomas racked his brains and remembered "a kind of a Christmas story" written for "some magazine."
