Description: MEASUREMENT OF TIME is a hardcover bound collection of articles authored by Nathan Fellowes Dupuis for the Canadian academic journal, QUEEN'S QUARTERLY. Published by The Jackson Press, Kingston, Ontario (147 pages. 6 1/4" X 9 1/4"). Hardcover edition. Dust jacket is NOT included here. The name of the owner, handwritten on the front endpaper, might satisfy a measure of obscure interest to horological enthusiasts. The book belonged to one Charles Augustus Sauter, who recently passed away in a nursing home in Waterbury, Connecticut. Charlie, as he was known to the only living acquaintances I can verify (my girlfriend and her sister, whose father was a prominent antiquarian horologist based in Waterbury), headed Research and Development for The Bulova Watch Company, serving as principal engineer for the development of the first Accutron. Sauter was also responsible for designing and testing the timekeeping elements for NASA's 1972 Apollo 17 Lunar Seismic Profiling Experiment. Needless to say, the uncertainty of maintaining measurable isochronism in a near-zero gravity environment tasked only the best and brightest innovators, and Sauter was presumably the best. Sauter's involvement with the Manhattan Project is rarely recorded in the handful of searchable online anecdotes, or the layman reminisces of non-horologists that I have heard. My girlfriend was a teenager the last time she had anything but a cursory interaction with her father's friend and knows next to nothing about the Manhattan Project, let alone Sauter's place in its history. I personally didn't know that Oak Ridge, TN was initially founded to house the production staff of the Clinton Engineer Works, which was tasked to produce the enriched uranium in the first atomic weapons. I had previously heard mention of Sauter's involvment with the Manhattan Project; I didn't put 2 and 2 together until I unburied this book from my GF's estate and discovered Sauter's handwritten nameplate with an address. That history is probably buried somewhere in a vault. Grading is subject to YOUR eyes, backed by my return policy (see below).
