Description: This porcelain plate from Doulton Burslem is from Doultons Spanish Ware range with hand painted poppies outlined in gold on a pink ground with a painted background-poppies , a very popular Art Nouveau motif. This pattern is C 1392. This type of ware was developed by John Slater and, although it was considered a new and unusual decoration for the time, it remained popular from the early 1880s into the early 1900s. Spanish Ware has been described by Desmond Eyles in his book The Doulton Burslem Wares as featuring exceedingly fine raised gold outline traceries of flowers, leaves, arabesques and other motifs, combined with on-glaze enamel painting and raised paste, often on a vellum or ivory ground. This plate measures 8 " in diameter . It has some very minor rubbing of the gilding to the rim, and has a hairline and a tiny chip to the base, as can be seen in photos . It dates from the period 1884-90.
