Description: lib Comedies and Tragedies written by John Fletcher and Francis Beaumont gentlemen. Never before printed and now published by the Authours Originall Copies. London: for Humphrey Robinson at the Three Pigeons and for Humphrey Mosley at the Princes Arms in St. Paul's Church-yard, 1647. NOTE: Two individual Fletcher and Beaumont plays sold at Swann Auction Galleries for about $4000 each! Here you get all the plays! The first collected theatrical works of the playwrights John Fletcher (1579-1625) and Francis Beaumont (1584-1616) who were Elizabethan and Jacobean playwrights, contemporaries of William Shakespeare aka Edward de Vere, the 17th Early of Oxford (1550-1604), and Ben Jononson (1572-1637). This book is regarded as one of the three great folio collections of theatrical works, the other two being The Shakespeare First Folio (1623) and the plays of Ben Jonson (1616). The design of this book is strikingly similar to the other two folios of plays. Currently one of only two copies available for sale online. The other is priced at $15,000. Priced to sell. Condition: Very Good pages in Good+ worn but holding binding. Main shortcomings: missing the portrait of Fletcher and the title page is hand-written, not printed. The last leaf of the last page is pasted to the back inside board. In a good+/very good- contemporary binding which may need some TLC at some point. Small former owner sticker on the front board in the upper corner. Overall a fairly good example but not perfect because of the two missing pages. Most of the pages are actually fairly clean with slight age-toning and but no foxing. A few wormholes here and there. First few leaves do have some soiling and toning but after about the second play, "The Spanish Curat", the leaves are much less toned but with the typical aging around the edges. Tiny tears here and there but nothing too serious. Very small 1/4" upper corner chip to one of the dedication by Ben Jonson, one of the unpaginated dedication leaves but very far away from the printed lines and text. The next two leaves have chips in the same place but about 1/8", the two leaves are also within the dedication pages. Tiny nicks to the right-hand edge of seven leaves, beginning withe Jonson dedication and ending with the first leaf of the first play, "The Mad Lover". Size, Binding: Medium folio, measuring 13 x 8 3/4 x 2 1/4" (33 x 22 1/4 x 5 3/4 cm). contemporary leather with faint parallel lines, so probably circa 1650. The binding is holding more or less and the chords are intact but a bit loose. Again it may need some care at some point. Collation: [28], 805 pages. Blank, (lacking Fletcher portrait), title page in manuscript (i), To the Stationer (iii), In Memory of Iohn Fletcher (iv-v), Upon the Works of Beaumont and Fletcher (a number of essays and poems about the playwrights; v-xiv), Dedications by numerous contemporaries such as Edward Powell, George Hills, Alexander Brome, and John Harris (xv-xxiii), Upon the Printing (xxiv), The Stationer. (xxv).Catalogue page lists 35 (thirty-five) Comedies and Tragedies (xxvi). The main text of plays are organized into eight groups each paginated separately (I've listed the first and last play of each section): First group three plays: "The Mad Lover" to "The Little French Lawyer" 1-76 Second group six plays: "The Custom of the Countrey" to "The False One" 1-144Third group nine plays: "The Chances" to "The Nice Valor: Or, The Passionate Mad-man" 1-168Fourth group three plays: "The Maid in the Mill" to "The Tragedie of Bonduca" 1-72Fifth Group seven plays: "The Sea Voyage" to "The Honest Mans Fortune" 1-172Sixth Group four plays: "The Queen of Corinth" to "Wit at Sever all Weapons" 1-92, Seventh Group two plays: "The Tragedy of Valentinian" to "The Faire Maide of the Inne 1-50Eighth Group three plays: "Loves Pilgrimmage" to "Foure Playes or Moral Representations, in one" 1-31.some pagination errors but collates complete with "Finis" at the bottom of the last page.
