The plants offered for sale are well-established divisions shown in the fourth and fifth images, planted in pure NZ sphagnum in 3.5”/9 cm square plastic pot. Nice foliage, unbelievable flowers and ease of cultivation makes this a must-have ornamental gesneriad. Columnea sp. Condor is an extraordinary is an extraordinarily showy-flowered epiphytic gesneriad endemic to the Ecuador-Peru border region in the Cordillera del Condor. Although still undescribed, it appears to be part of the Trichantha section of Columnea, which includes a few better-known species such as C. minor. There seem to have been a couple collections made around 15 years ago, but only one line persists in cultivation. I supplied seed to a couple US nurseries and botanical gardens in the early part of this decade, so plants have been sporadically available in the trade since about 2012. The combination of leaf and flower color is stunning. Can be grown to full specimen size in an 8”/20 cm pot. This species prefers warm to intermediate temperatures but has proven surprisingly cool tolerant here in the SF Bay Area, certainly to overnight dips into the high 40s F/8.5 C with minimal leaf spotting All plants offered are greenhouse grown on benches in the San Francisco Bay Area, California.
